## What it does

Neon Functions are Node.js HTTP handlers that live on a branch of your Neon project. Each one gets a public HTTPS URL, runs in the same region as the database, and picks up `DATABASE_URL` without extra wiring. The interesting part is how little it times out. The handler has 15 minutes to start answering, and an open stream stays up while bytes keep moving. That is exactly the space where lambda-style functions cut you off.

Inside, a function is a default export with a `fetch(request)` method returning a `Response`. A Hono app matches that shape, so `export default app` is enough. Node.js 24 means ordinary Node APIs work, and module-scope state lasts across requests on the same isolate. The skill covers the local `neon dev` loop, deployment through `neon`, `neon.ts` or the Neon API, plus logs and the invocation URL. Function Triggers get their own section: `type: "schedule"` POSTs on a cron, `storage_object_created` fires when an object lands in storage.

Check the region before anything else. Neon Functions run in `aws-us-east-2`, `aws-us-east-1`, `aws-eu-central-1` and `aws-ap-southeast-1`; a project outside those is a reason to stop and pick a different tool. The parent `neon` skill is required too, added with `neon skills -s neon -y` when missing. For live UIs over database rows, the same repo points you at neon-realtime.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neondatabase/agent-skills --skill neon-functions -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/neon-functions/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/neon-functions/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neondatabase/agent-skills --skill neon-functions -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/neon-functions/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neondatabase/agent-skills --skill neon-functions -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/neon-functions/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install neondatabase/agent-skills neon-functions
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/neon-functions/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neondatabase/agent-skills --skill neon-functions -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/neondatabase/agent-skills --path skills/neon-functions
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/neon-functions/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neondatabase/agent-skills --skill neon-functions -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/neondatabase/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/neon-functions/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- ship an API that sits in the database's region
- keep an SSE or WebSocket connection open inside the handler
- stream an agent reply past the usual lambda timeout
- take a webhook that fans out into several Postgres writes
- fire a function on a cron schedule or on an object upload

## Example prompts
- Deploy a function on my Neon branch that streams the agent reply over SSE
- Write a Hono webhook handler and point it at the branch `DATABASE_URL`
- Add a `schedule` trigger that POSTs to my function

# Neon Functions

Currently available in `aws-us-east-2`, `aws-us-east-1`, `aws-eu-central-1`, and `aws-ap-southeast-1`.

Neon Functions are long-running Node.js HTTP handlers deployed onto a Neon branch. Each function gets a public HTTPS URL, runs in the same region as your database, and — if the branch has Postgres — gets `DATABASE_URL` injected automatically. You deploy and manage them through the same Neon CLI, `neon.ts`, and API you already use.

Use this skill to help the user define, run locally, deploy, and manage functions next to their database. Deliver a deployed function with its invocation URL, a working local `neon dev` loop, or a precise answer from the official Neon docs.
