## What it does

The skill covers the whole vector workflow in Neo4j: `CREATE VECTOR INDEX` on nodes or relationships, cosine or euclidean similarity search, HNSW and quantization settings. Embeddings can live on nodes or on edges. Hybrid search is supported too — vector results merged with fulltext or several vector sources.

Before the first query the skill suggests checking the server version with `CALL dbms.components()`. On `2026.01` and later it uses the `SEARCH` clause with in-index filtering; on `2025.x` it falls back to `db.index.vector.queryNodes()`, marked deprecated in `2026.04`. On Aura the version reports `5.27` no matter the engine, but Aura actually runs `2026.x`, so `SEARCH` is the right pick there.

Some limits matter. The `WITH` list for filterable properties takes scalar types only — lists, points and the vector property itself are rejected. Changing quantization type or provider means dropping the index, recreating it and repopulating embeddings. GraphRAG pipelines with `retrieval_query`, GDS graph embeddings (FastRP, Node2Vec) and fulltext-only search are out of scope; sibling skills in the same repository handle those.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-vector-index-skill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/neo4j-vector-index-skill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/neo4j-vector-index-skill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-vector-index-skill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/neo4j-vector-index-skill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-vector-index-skill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/neo4j-vector-index-skill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills neo4j-vector-index-skill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-vector-index-skill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --path neo4j-vector-index-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/neo4j-vector-index-skill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-vector-index-skill -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- create a vector index on nodes or relationships with the right dimensions
- pick between the SEARCH clause and the queryNodes procedure by version
- tune HNSW and quantization to fit available memory
- batch-update embeddings after switching models
- combine vector hits with fulltext or other ranked sources

## Example prompts
- Create a vector index on Chunk.embedding with 1536 dimensions and cosine similarity
- Find the ten nearest chunks to this embedding using SEARCH
- Recompute embeddings for every Article node after the model change
