# neo4j-security-skill

This skill walks an agent through Neo4j user, role and privilege management in Cypher against the system database. Useful when access has to be provisioned by script instead of by hand.

## What it does

The skill covers Neo4j security administration: creating and suspending users (`CREATE USER`, `ALTER USER`, `DROP USER`), roles and their assignment, and privileges on graph, database and DBMS through `GRANT`, `DENY`, `REVOKE`. A decision table maps each goal to the right command, from `GRANT ACCESS ON DATABASE` up to `GRANT ALL ON DBMS`. User tags and ABAC rules against OIDC claims get their own sections, along with a reference for LDAP and SSO auth provider setup.

Everything runs against the system database — `cypher-shell -d system`, or `database="system"` from a driver. There is a mandatory write gate: before any `CREATE USER`, `GRANT`, `DENY` or `CREATE AUTH RULE` the agent must show the exact Cypher, spell out the impact and wait for a yes. No privilege change happens silently, which is the right default for this kind of work.

Two things to know up front. Property-level access control and ABAC require Enterprise Edition. And `SHOW USERS WITH AUTH AS COMMANDS` returns credentials, so its output does not belong in logs, tickets or source control. Writing Cypher against application data, plus cluster ops and backups, sit in separate skills.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-security-skill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/neo4j-security-skill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/neo4j-security-skill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-security-skill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/neo4j-security-skill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-security-skill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/neo4j-security-skill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills neo4j-security-skill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/neo4j-security-skill/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-security-skill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --path neo4j-security-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/neo4j-security-skill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-security-skill -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills/tree/HEAD/neo4j-security-skill/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create a user and force a password change on first login
- grant one role to several people in a single command
- deny read on one property without closing off the rest of the node
- list a role's current privileges as runnable commands
- suspend an account instead of dropping it

## Example prompts
- create the analyst role and grant it to alice and bob
- show me the privileges of the analyst role as runnable commands
- deny analyst read access to the ssn property on Person nodes

description: Programmatic security management in Neo4j — RBAC/ABAC, user lifecycle (CREATE/ALTER/DROP USER),
  role lifecycle (CREATE/GRANT ROLE/DROP ROLE), privilege grants and denies (GRANT/DENY/REVOKE on graph,
  database, DBMS), property-level access control, sub-graph access control, SHOW PRIVILEGES inspection,

  Property-level security and ABAC require Enterprise Edition.

## When to Use
- Creating, altering, suspending, or dropping users
- Creating roles, granting/revoking role membership
- Granting/denying/revoking graph, database, or DBMS privileges
- Inspecting current privileges (`SHOW PRIVILEGES`)
- Implementing property-level access control (read/write per property)
- Setting up ABAC rules against OIDC claims or native user tags
- Referencing LDAP/SSO auth provider configuration

## When NOT to Use
- **Writing Cypher queries against application data** → `neo4j-cypher-skill`
- **Cluster ops, backups, server config** → `neo4j-cli-tools-skill`
- **Driver connection setup** → `neo4j-driver-*-skill`

---

## MCP Write Gate — MANDATORY

Before executing ANY of the following, show the planned command and wait for explicit confirmation:
- `CREATE USER` / `ALTER USER` / `DROP USER`
- `CREATE ROLE` / `DROP ROLE`
- `GRANT` / `DENY` / `REVOKE` (any privilege)
- `CREATE AUTH RULE` / `DROP AUTH RULE`

Never auto-execute privilege changes. Show exact Cypher, annotate impact, get "yes".

---

## Execution Context

All security Cypher runs against the **system** database:
```cypher
// Neo4j auto-routes CREATE/ALTER/SHOW USER|ROLE|PRIVILEGE to system
// If using cypher-shell: cypher-shell -d system
// If using driver: use database="system"
```

---

## 1. User Management

### Create user
```cypher
CREATE USER alice SET PASSWORD 'secret' CHANGE NOT REQUIRED;
// CHANGE REQUIRED (default): forces password change on first login
// CHANGE NOT REQUIRED: password valid immediately
// SET STATUS ACTIVE (default) | SUSPENDED
```

### Parameterised password (preferred in scripts)
```cypher
