# neo4j-kafka-skill

Sets up the Neo4j Connector for Kafka in both directions and the native CDC API. Useful when Kafka events have to land in a graph or Neo4j changes need to reach topics.

## What it does

The skill walks through four sink strategies: Cypher, Pattern, CDC and CUD. Each comes with ready config snippets — Cypher queries that use the `__value`, `__key` and `__header` bindings the connector injects, or field-to-node mapping with no code at all. The source side is covered twice: CDC on Neo4j 5.13+ and a query-based source that streams results on a schedule.

Exactly-once semantics and error handling get their own sections. EOS needs a NODE KEY constraint on the offset label plus `neo4j.eos-offset-label` in the config; without it the connector is at-least-once, so write idempotent queries with `MERGE` instead of `CREATE`. For production the skill advises `errors.tolerance=all` together with a dead-letter queue, since the default `none` halts the connector on the first bad message.

You will need Neo4j Connector for Kafka 5.5.2 or newer, Kafka Connect 3.x or Confluent Platform 7.x, and Java 11+. CDC strategies only run on Neo4j 5.13+ Enterprise, AuraDB Business Critical or AuraDB VDC — Community Edition will not work. Passwords should go through the Kafka Connect secrets provider rather than sitting in the config.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-kafka-skill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/neo4j-kafka-skill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/neo4j-kafka-skill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-kafka-skill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/neo4j-kafka-skill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-kafka-skill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/neo4j-kafka-skill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills neo4j-kafka-skill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/neo4j-kafka-skill/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-kafka-skill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --path neo4j-kafka-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/neo4j-kafka-skill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-kafka-skill -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- configure a Neo4j sink connector for Kafka with Cypher-based transformation
- map JSON message fields to nodes and relationships without writing code
- turn on exactly-once semantics and create the required constraint
- route failed messages to a dead-letter queue instead of stopping the connector
- stream Neo4j changes to Kafka topics via CDC or a scheduled query

## Example prompts
- Set up a Neo4j sink connector for Kafka on the person-creates topic using the Cypher strategy and an idempotent MERGE on id
- Enable exactly-once semantics on the sink connector and show me which constraint it needs
- Configure a CDC source connector so changes to Person nodes go to separate topics per operation

description: Configure and operate the Neo4j Connector for Kafka (sink + source) and the
  native Neo4j CDC API. Covers Cypher/Pattern/CUD sink strategies, CDC-based and query-based
  source, exactly-once semantics, DLQ error handling, Confluent Cloud managed connector,
  schema registry (Avro/JSON), and native db.cdc.query cursor-loop patterns (Neo4j 5.13+
  Enterprise/Aura BC/VDC). Use when streaming Kafka events into Neo4j, streaming Neo4j
  changes to Kafka, or querying Neo4j change events without Kafka. Does NOT handle Cypher
  query authoring — use neo4j-cypher-skill. Does NOT handle bulk CSV/file import — use

# Neo4j Kafka Skill

## When to Use

- Writing Kafka events into Neo4j (sink connector — Cypher, Pattern, CDC, CUD strategies)
- Streaming Neo4j changes to Kafka topics (source connector — CDC or query-based)
- Querying Neo4j change events natively without Kafka (`db.cdc.query`)
- Configuring Confluent Cloud managed Neo4j sink connector
- Setting up schema registry (Avro/JSON Schema) for typed Kafka messages
- Enabling exactly-once semantics or dead-letter queue on sink

## When NOT to Use

- **Cypher query authoring** → `neo4j-cypher-skill`
- **Bulk CSV/JSON file import** → `neo4j-import-skill`
- **GDS algorithms** → `neo4j-gds-skill`
- **Live app write patterns** → `neo4j-cypher-skill`

## Decision Table — Which connector strategy?

| Use case | Strategy |
|---|---|
| Custom transformation of Kafka payload → graph | Sink: **Cypher** |
| Mirror another Neo4j CDC source | Sink: **CDC** (schema or source-id sub-strategy) |
| Map Kafka JSON fields to graph nodes/rels with no code | Sink: **Pattern** |
| Consume pre-formatted CUD JSON messages | Sink: **CUD** |
| Stream all Neo4j changes to Kafka (real-time) | Source: **CDC** (Neo4j 5.13+ EE/Aura BC/VDC) |
| Stream specific query results on a schedule | Source: **Query** |
| Consume CDC events in-process, no Kafka | **Native CDC API** (`db.cdc.query`) |
