## What it does

The skill guides an agent through building retrieval pipelines on Neo4j with the `neo4j-graphrag` package, version 1.22.0 and up. It ships a selection table: `VectorRetriever` for baseline semantic search, `HybridRetriever` when a fulltext index exists, `VectorCypherRetriever` and `HybridCypherRetriever` for graph traversal after the vector lookup, `Text2CypherRetriever` for natural-language-to-Cypher without an embedder, and `ToolsRetriever` for LLM-routed multi-retriever setups. External vector stores get their own retrievers: Weaviate, Pinecone, Qdrant.

From there it shows how to wire a retriever and an LLM into a `GraphRAG` pipeline, how to write a `retrieval_query` fragment that must end in `RETURN` with `score` present, and how to create the vector and fulltext indexes and wait for `ONLINE` before ingesting anything. LLM providers are covered across the board: OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini/VertexAI, Bedrock, Cohere, Mistral, Ollama. LangChain and LlamaIndex integration, token usage tracking and the Cypher 25 `SEARCH` clause are in scope too.

You need Python 3.10 or newer and the `neo4j` driver 5.17.0 or newer. Install the package with the extra for your provider, for instance `pip install neo4j-graphrag[openai]`, and keep the API key in an environment variable. Knowledge-graph construction, plain vector search, GDS analytics and agent memory are out of scope — each has its own skill in the same repository, so don't expect one request to cover them.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-graphrag-skill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/neo4j-graphrag-skill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/neo4j-graphrag-skill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-graphrag-skill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/neo4j-graphrag-skill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-graphrag-skill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/neo4j-graphrag-skill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills neo4j-graphrag-skill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/neo4j-graphrag-skill/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-graphrag-skill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --path neo4j-graphrag-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/neo4j-graphrag-skill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-graphrag-skill -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- pick a retriever for the job: vector, hybrid, or graph-augmented
- write a `retrieval_query` fragment that keeps `score` in the `RETURN` clause
- create vector and fulltext indexes and wait for `ONLINE`
- wire a retriever and an LLM into a `GraphRAG` pipeline
- point retrieval at an external vector store instead of Neo4j embeddings

## Example prompts
- Build a GraphRAG pipeline on Neo4j with HybridCypherRetriever and Anthropic, show the full code
- Write a `retrieval_query` fragment that pulls the article and its mentioned organizations after the vector lookup
- Switch the retriever to Ollama so nothing leaves the machine
