Walks you from an empty folder to a running Neo4j app in eight stages, from tool checks to a notebook or service.

## What it does

The skill runs a fixed chain: `0-prerequisites → 1-context → 2-provision → 3-model → 4-load → 5-explore → 6-query → 7-build`. At the start of each stage the agent reads one reference file under `references/` and ignores the rest, so the context stays clean. It works both with a human in the loop and fully autonomously; the stated budget is up to 15 minutes autonomous and up to 90 minutes HITL.

What lands in your working directory: `schema/schema.json` with the graph model, `schema.cypher` with constraints and indexes, `data/generate.py` for synthetic data, `queries/queries.cypher` with validated queries, and `progress.md` tracking each stage. Everything is written to files rather than left as chat text. That progress file is what makes resuming work: after an interrupted session the skill greps for the first stage with `status: pending` and picks up there instead of re-asking what it already recorded.

You need the `neo4j-mcp` binary before anything else — stage 0 does not complete without it. Provisioning Aura expects credentials in `aura.env`, and database access expects `.env`. Cypher authoring is out of scope: that is `neo4j-cypher-skill`, while driver upgrades and Cypher migration belong to `neo4j-migration-skill` and admin work on an existing database to `neo4j-cli-tools-skill`. If your project is already running and you only need a query or a backup, this skill is the wrong tool.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-getting-started-skill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/neo4j-getting-started-skill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/neo4j-getting-started-skill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-getting-started-skill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/neo4j-getting-started-skill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-getting-started-skill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/neo4j-getting-started-skill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills neo4j-getting-started-skill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/neo4j-getting-started-skill/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-getting-started-skill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --path neo4j-getting-started-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/neo4j-getting-started-skill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-getting-started-skill -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills/tree/HEAD/neo4j-getting-started-skill/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- stand up a Neo4j database from scratch with constraints and indexes in place
- generate synthetic data for a demo or local development
- define a graph model and validate it before loading anything
- build a notebook or app on top of a ready database
- resume onboarding after a session was interrupted

## Example prompts
- Start a new Neo4j project from scratch and take me through every stage to a running app
- Generate synthetic data for the Person and Post model and load it into the database
- Resume from where we stopped — check `progress.md`

# Neo4j Getting-Started Skill

Guide a **user or agent** from zero to a working Neo4j application by executing the 8 stages below in order.

**At the start of each stage**: read the corresponding `${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/references/<stage-name>.md` file and follow its instructions. Only load the stage you are currently executing — not all at once.

**"User" means both a human developer and an autonomous coding agent.**

---

## When to Use

- New Neo4j project from scratch (local/Docker/Aura)
- Full onboarding: zero → DB → model → load → app
- Generating synthetic data for demos or dev

## When NOT to Use

- **Cypher authoring on existing project** → `neo4j-cypher-skill`
- **Driver upgrades / Cypher migration** → `neo4j-migration-skill`
- **Admin on existing DB** (backup, restore, import) → `neo4j-cli-tools-skill`
