## What it does

The skill kicks in when your code touches `GraphDatabase.driver`, `execute_query`, `execute_read`, `execute_write`, `AsyncGraphDatabase`, `neo4j.Result` or `RoutingControl`. The agent gets working patterns: one driver per application instead of one per request, connection settings pulled from environment variables rather than hardcoded, a clear split between `execute_query` and managed transactions, plus result handling and type mapping.

It also covers URI schemes (`neo4j+s://` for Aura, `bolt+s://` for a single instance), auth options, connection pool tuning and causal consistency. One detail worth knowing: config keyword arguments end with a trailing underscore (`database_`, `routing_`), while query parameter names must not. Values go into Cypher as `$param` only — string formatting breaks plan caching and opens the door to injection.

Python 3.10 or newer is required, and the package is `neo4j`, not `neo4j-driver`. The author advises pinning `neo4j>=6.4.1`, because 6.4.0 can hang forever while acquiring a connection from the pool and double-encodes bearer tokens over the HTTP Query API. Cypher authoring, driver upgrades and GraphRAG pipelines live in separate skills.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-python-skill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/neo4j-driver-python-skill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/neo4j-driver-python-skill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-python-skill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/neo4j-driver-python-skill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-python-skill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/neo4j-driver-python-skill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills neo4j-driver-python-skill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/neo4j-driver-python-skill/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-python-skill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --path neo4j-driver-python-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/neo4j-driver-python-skill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-python-skill -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- connect to Neo4j from Python without hardcoding credentials
- pick between `execute_query` and managed transactions for a given query
- read query results and pull node-creation counters out of the summary
- port synchronous driver code to `AsyncGraphDatabase`
- load data in batches with UNWIND instead of row-by-row writes

## Example prompts
- Write a Python function that reads from Neo4j with `driver.execute_query` and `routing_=RoutingControl.READ`
- Rewrite this code to use `AsyncGraphDatabase` and managed transactions
- Review my Neo4j driver setup: connection pool, error handling, UNWIND batching

description: Neo4j Python Driver v6 — driver lifecycle, execute_query, managed and explicit
  transactions, async (AsyncGraphDatabase), result handling, data type mapping, error handling,
  UNWIND batching, connection pool tuning, and causal consistency. Use when writing Python
  code that connects to Neo4j via GraphDatabase.driver, execute_query, execute_read,
  execute_write, AsyncGraphDatabase, neo4j.Result, or RoutingControl. Package name is
  `neo4j` (not neo4j-driver) since v6. Python >=3.10 required.
  Does NOT handle Cypher query authoring — use neo4j-cypher-skill.
  Does NOT cover driver upgrades or breaking changes — use neo4j-migration-skill.
  Does NOT cover GraphRAG pipelines (neo4j-graphrag package) — use neo4j-graphrag-skill.

## When to Use
- Writing Python code that connects to Neo4j
- Setting up driver, sessions, transactions, or async patterns
- Debugging result handling, serialization, or UNWIND batching
- Reviewing Neo4j driver usage in Python code

## When NOT to Use
- **Writing/optimizing Cypher** → `neo4j-cypher-skill`
- **Driver version upgrades** → `neo4j-migration-skill`
- **GraphRAG pipelines** (`neo4j-graphrag` package) → `neo4j-graphrag-skill`

## Installation

```bash
pip install neo4j                  # package name is `neo4j`, NOT `neo4j-driver` (deprecated since v6)
pip install neo4j-rust-ext         # optional: 3–10× faster serialization, same API
```

**Python >=3.10 required** for v6.x. Python 3.14 supported [6.1+]. Pandas 3 and PyArrow 23/24 supported [6.2+]. PyArrow 25 and Bolt 6.1 `uuid.UUID` values supported [6.3+]; driver-created SSL contexts honour `SSLKEYLOGFILE` [6.3+]. Python 3.15 supported [6.4+]. Pin `neo4j>=6.4.1` — 6.4.0 can spin forever on pool acquisition and double-encodes bearer tokens over HTTP Query API.

Neo4j 2026.08+ `UUID` properties require `neo4j>=6.3` to round-trip as `uuid.UUID`. Storing UUID needs block store format (Enterprise); Community (aligned format) fails: `storing properties of type UUID is not supported in aligned store format` — store `str(uuid)`.
