## What it does

The skill targets projects using the official `neo4j-driver` v6 with Node.js 18+ or modern browsers. It enforces creating a shared driver singleton at startup, validating connectivity with `verifyConnectivity`, and terminating via `driver.close()`.

Query execution patterns cover `driver.executeQuery()` with automatic retries and explicit database routing. For streaming or multi-query workflows, it details `session.executeRead()` and `executeWrite()`. All records must be extracted with `collect()` inside the callback before the transaction terminates.

The skill intentionally avoids Cypher syntax generation and driver version upgrades. Without reading records before exiting a transaction callback, the stream closes immediately and yields empty data.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-javascript-skill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/neo4j-driver-javascript-skill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/neo4j-driver-javascript-skill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-javascript-skill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/neo4j-driver-javascript-skill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-javascript-skill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/neo4j-driver-javascript-skill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills neo4j-driver-javascript-skill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/neo4j-driver-javascript-skill/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-javascript-skill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --path neo4j-driver-javascript-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/neo4j-driver-javascript-skill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-javascript-skill -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- create a shared neo4j.driver singleton with connectivity checks
- configure parameterised executeQuery calls with explicit database targets
- read streaming records inside managed executeRead and executeWrite transactions
- handle neo4j.int conversions and TypeScript type definitions

## Example prompts
- Set up a Neo4j driver v6 connection singleton for a Node.js TypeScript service
- Write a transaction using executeWrite that runs a parameterized query and collects results
- Fix session leaks and handle neo4j.int values returned from executeQuery

description: Neo4j JavaScript/TypeScript Driver v6 — driver lifecycle, executeQuery,
  managed transactions (executeRead/executeWrite), session.run, Integer handling, JSON
  serialization, record access, async/await patterns, TypeScript types, error handling,
  and connection setup for Node.js and browser. Use when writing JS/TS code that connects
  to Neo4j — neo4j.driver(), executeQuery, executeRead, executeWrite, session.run,
  neo4j.int, record.get, Integer, BookmarkManager, bolt://, neo4j+s://.
  Does NOT handle Cypher query authoring — use neo4j-cypher-skill.
  Does NOT cover driver version migration — use neo4j-migration-skill.
compatibility: neo4j-driver v6; Node.js >=18; TypeScript supported via bundled types
version: 1.0.6

## When to Use
- Writing JS/TS code that connects to Neo4j (Node.js or browser)
- Setting up driver, sessions, transactions, or query execution
- Debugging Integer handling, result consumption, session leaks, async errors
- TypeScript type annotations for driver objects

## When NOT to Use
- **Writing/optimizing Cypher** → `neo4j-cypher-skill`
- **Upgrading driver version** → `neo4j-migration-skill`
- **RxJS session API** → [references/rxjs-session.md](references/rxjs-session.md)

---

## Install

```bash
npm install neo4j-driver   # or: yarn add neo4j-driver
```

---

## Environment Variables

Load connection config from environment — never hardcode credentials.

```bash
# .env file (add to .gitignore)
NEO4J_URI=neo4j+s://xxx.databases.neo4j.io
NEO4J_USERNAME=neo4j
NEO4J_PASSWORD=secret
NEO4J_DATABASE=neo4j
```

```javascript
// npm install dotenv (for Node.js < 20 or when .env auto-load is off)
import 'dotenv/config'   // or: require('dotenv').config()
const URI      = process.env.NEO4J_URI
const USER     = process.env.NEO4J_USERNAME
const PASSWORD = process.env.NEO4J_PASSWORD
const DATABASE = process.env.NEO4J_DATABASE ?? 'neo4j'
```

Node 20+ natively loads `.env` with `--env-file .env`. Next.js / Vite auto-load `.env` — no dotenv import needed.

---

## Driver Lifecycle

Create **one driver instance** at startup. Share everywhere. Never create per-request.

```javascript
// CommonJS
const neo4j = require('neo4j-driver')
// ESM / TypeScript
import neo4j from 'neo4j-driver'
const driver = neo4j.driver(
  process.env.NEO4J_URI,                              // 'neo4j+s://xxx.databases.neo4j.io'
  neo4j.auth.basic(process.env.NEO4J_USER, process.env.NEO4J_PASSWORD)
)
await driver.verifyConnectivity()   // fail fast on startup if unreachable
// On shutdown:
````
