## What it does

The skill covers Neo4j Java Driver v6: driver lifecycle, Maven and Gradle setup, `executableQuery`, managed transactions via `executeRead` and `executeWrite`, explicit transactions, async and reactive patterns, error handling, data type mapping, pool tuning and causal consistency with bookmarks. Your agent picks it up when the code mentions `GraphDatabase.driver`, `SessionConfig` or `TransactionCallback`.

Inside there is a table for picking the right API: when `executableQuery` is enough, when you need `session.executeRead/Write`, and when to reach for `beginTransaction`. It also flags that `CALL { … } IN TRANSACTIONS` and `USING PERIODIC COMMIT` manage their own transaction, so only `session.run()` works there — `executableQuery` and `executeRead/Write` fail on those queries. Another common trap: `Result` is a lazy cursor tied to the open transaction, so collect rows inside the callback or you get `ResultConsumedException`.

The dependency is `org.neo4j.driver:neo4j-java-driver` at 6.3.0. For the server-side `UUID` type you need driver 6.2.1 or newer. Credentials should come from the `NEO4J_URI`, `NEO4J_USERNAME`, `NEO4J_PASSWORD` and `NEO4J_DATABASE` environment variables rather than hardcoded strings. Cypher authoring, driver version upgrades and Spring Data Neo4j live in separate skills, not this one.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-java-skill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/neo4j-driver-java-skill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/neo4j-driver-java-skill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-java-skill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/neo4j-driver-java-skill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-java-skill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/neo4j-driver-java-skill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills neo4j-driver-java-skill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/neo4j-driver-java-skill/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-java-skill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --path neo4j-driver-java-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/neo4j-driver-java-skill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-driver-java-skill -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills/tree/HEAD/neo4j-driver-java-skill/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- set up the Neo4j driver in a Maven or Gradle project
- decide between executableQuery and executeRead for a given query
- collect results inside the callback to avoid ResultConsumedException
- tune the connection pool and bookmarks for causal consistency
- move Neo4j access onto CompletableFuture or Project Reactor

## Example prompts
- Connect this service to Neo4j with GraphDatabase.driver, read credentials from NEO4J_URI and NEO4J_PASSWORD
- Rewrite this query with executableQuery and parameters instead of string concatenation
- Do the write through executeWrite and explain why results must be collected inside the callback
