## What it does

This skill gives a coding agent the facts about `neo4j-agent-memory`, a Neo4j Labs Python package. Memory comes in three layers. Short-term holds session messages; long-term turns conversations into entities and links under the POLE+O model; reasoning keeps a record of thought, tool call and outcome. All of it sits in one Neo4j database as connected nodes.

Two ways to run it are covered. You can install the library yourself with `pip install neo4j-agent-memory` plus an extra per framework or MCP, and point it at your own Neo4j instance. Or use the NAMS hosted service at `https://memory.neo4jlabs.com`, which exposes a REST API and a remote MCP endpoint.

The library asks for Python 3.10+, and vector indexes need Neo4j 5.20+. Version numbers and extras shift between releases, so check PyPI before you publish anything that quotes them. The skill does not cover raw driver work or Cypher authoring either; the same repo ships `neo4j-driver-python-skill` and `neo4j-cypher-skill` for that.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-agent-memory-skill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/neo4j-agent-memory-skill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/neo4j-agent-memory-skill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-agent-memory-skill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/neo4j-agent-memory-skill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-agent-memory-skill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/neo4j-agent-memory-skill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills neo4j-agent-memory-skill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/neo4j-agent-memory-skill/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-agent-memory-skill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --path neo4j-agent-memory-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/neo4j-agent-memory-skill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neo4j-contrib/neo4j-skills --skill neo4j-agent-memory-skill -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- Keep an agent's conversation history across sessions
- Build a graph of people, organizations and their links from chats
- Record reasoning and tool-call traces for later inspection
- Wire Neo4j-backed memory into LangChain, CrewAI or PydanticAI
- Weigh graph-native agent memory against a vector-only setup

## Example prompts
- Hook neo4j-agent-memory into my LangChain agent and persist the session history
- Explain how the POLE+O model works in the package's long-term memory
- Show me how to authenticate against the NAMS remote MCP endpoint

description: Authoritative reference for the neo4j-agent-memory Python package — a graph-native memory system for AI agents built on Neo4j — and for the hosted service (NAMS) at memory.neo4jlabs.com. Use this skill whenever the user mentions neo4j-agent-memory, agent memory with Neo4j, context graphs, the POLE+O model, MemoryClient/MemorySettings, the memory MCP server, or any of the framework integrations (LangChain, PydanticAI, CrewAI, AWS Strands, Google ADK, Microsoft Agent Framework, OpenAI Agents, LlamaIndex). Also use when writing documentation, blog posts, tutorials, PRDs, or code samples for the project, when comparing agent memory approaches, or when positioning graph-native memory against vector-only approaches — even if the user doesn't explicitly name the package.

# neo4j-agent-memory

Authoritative reference for the `neo4j-agent-memory` Python package — a Neo4j Labs project that gives AI agents three distinct memory layers (short-term, long-term, reasoning) in a single knowledge graph.

> ⚠️ **Verify authoritative state before writing.** Version numbers, extras, tool counts, and API surface change between releases. The values in this skill reflect a specific point in time. Before publishing anything version-sensitive, confirm against **PyPI** (`https://pypi.org/project/neo4j-agent-memory/`) and the **GitHub README** (`https://github.com/neo4j-labs/agent-memory`). PyPI is the authoritative source for version numbers — never infer.

## When to Use

- Building AI agents that need persistent memory (short-term, long-term, reasoning traces) backed by Neo4j
- Using the `neo4j-agent-memory` Python package or the hosted NAMS service at memory.neo4jlabs.com
- Integrating agent memory with LangChain, PydanticAI, CrewAI, AWS Strands, Google ADK, OpenAI Agents, LlamaIndex, or Microsoft Agent Framework
- Writing documentation, tutorials, or positioning content about graph-native agent memory
- Comparing graph-native memory against vector-only approaches

## When NOT to Use

- **Plain Neo4j driver connections** (no memory layer needed) → use `neo4j-driver-python-skill`
- **Writing or optimizing Cypher queries** → use `neo4j-cypher-skill`
- **GraphRAG retrieval pipelines** → use `neo4j-graphrag-skill`
