## What it does

The skill acts as a routing surface. It identifies the task type and loads one matching file from `references/` — setup, deployment readiness checks, model selection, ASR deployment for Parakeet, Canary, Whisper and Nemotron ASR Streaming, TTS for Magpie, NMT, and pipeline configuration. Custom NeMo models get their own routes along the `.nemo` → RMIR → NIM path via `riva-build`.

Cloud inference needs `pip install -U nvidia-riva-client` and an `NVIDIA_API_KEY` from build.nvidia.com. Self-hosted deployment requires NVIDIA AI Enterprise, plus drivers, Docker, Container Toolkit and an `NGC_API_KEY`. The skill treats both keys as secrets: don't print, paste, commit or log real values, and keep persistent keys in a credential manager or a `chmod 600` env file.

One thing that bites people: the model cache directory mounted at `/opt/nim/.cache` has to be writable by the container user `nvs:1000`. Run `sudo chown 1000:1000 $LOCAL_NIM_CACHE` after creating it, or the model download dies with `I/O error Permission denied (os error 13)`. Passing `-u "$(id -u):$(id -g)"` to `docker run` doesn't help either, because `/opt/nim/workspace` inside the container isn't writable to arbitrary UIDs. For per-release detail — model catalog, container IDs, VRAM minimums — the skill points you at the NVIDIA docs instead of hardcoding it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemotron-speech -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nemotron-speech/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nemotron-speech/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemotron-speech -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nemotron-speech/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemotron-speech -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nemotron-speech/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install NVIDIA/skills nemotron-speech
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nemotron-speech/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemotron-speech -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills --path skills/nemotron-speech
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nemotron-speech/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemotron-speech -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/nemotron-speech/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- deploy an ASR NIM on your own server with Docker
- pick a speech recognition model for a given task
- tune VAD, diarization and chunk size in an ASR pipeline
- build a custom TTS model from `.nemo` into RMIR and NIM
- find an IPA pronunciation for a word the synthesizer misreads

## Example prompts
- help me deploy a Riva ASR NIM on my server
- which TTS model should I use for English speech
- build a custom ASR model from `.nemo` with `riva-build`

# Nemotron Speech Skills

> **Note:** "Nemotron Speech" is the public-facing name for what NVIDIA documents today as **Riva** / **Riva NIM**. All commands, container images, gRPC APIs, Python imports, and documentation URLs still use **"Riva"** — the rename is brand-only. Do not rename commands, images, or doc URLs.
>
> **Agent:** When walking the user through a multi-step workflow, announce each step before presenting it: **Step N/M — Step Title** (e.g., "**Step 1/4 — Deploy the Container**").

## Purpose

Single entry point for all NVIDIA Nemotron Speech (Riva) NIM workflows: ASR (speech-to-text), TTS (text-to-speech), and NMT (translation). Covers cloud-hosted inference via build.nvidia.com, self-hosted Docker deployment, client-protocol choice for ASR (gRPC, HTTP, WebSocket), custom NeMo model deployment via `riva-build`, ASR pipeline tuning (VAD, diarization, language models), and the prerequisite Docker / NGC / driver setup.
