## What it does

The skill gathers resiliency settings for Megatron Bridge training in one place. It covers four mechanisms: fault tolerance via `FaultToleranceConfig` or the NeMo Run plugin, straggler detection with `NVRxStragglerDetectionConfig`, preemption handling, and the experimental re-run state machine (`RerunStateMachineConfig`). There is also an experimental in-process restart (`InProcessRestartConfig`).

Fault tolerance targets Slurm. Launch with `ft_launcher`, not `torchrun`, and set `GROUP_RANK=0` for non-Slurm setups. Timeout monitoring is split by section: setup, training steps, checkpointing and out-of-section time. With `calc_ft_timeouts=True` the values land in `ft_state.json` and get reused on later runs.

In-process restart needs three environment variables: `TORCH_CPP_LOG_LEVEL=error`, `TORCH_NCCL_RETHROW_CUDA_ERRORS=0` and `NCCL_NVLS_ENABLE=0`. The PyTorch NCCL watchdog timeout has to exceed `hard_timeout`, otherwise the mechanism will not fire the way you expect. NeMo-Run's Slurm Executor is not supported, so check how you launch jobs before turning this on.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-mbridge-resiliency -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nemo-mbridge-resiliency/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nemo-mbridge-resiliency/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-mbridge-resiliency -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nemo-mbridge-resiliency/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-mbridge-resiliency -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nemo-mbridge-resiliency/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install NVIDIA/skills nemo-mbridge-resiliency
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nemo-mbridge-resiliency/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-mbridge-resiliency -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills --path skills/nemo-mbridge-resiliency
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nemo-mbridge-resiliency/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-mbridge-resiliency -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- enable fault tolerance for a Slurm training run
- find the rank that slows down every step
- restart training after a node dies without losing progress
- handle preemption and keep the checkpoint
- debug a training hang that appeared after a commit

## Example prompts
- enable fault tolerance for the Slurm run with three in-job restarts
- set up straggler detection with a 0.7 threshold and a report every 300 seconds
- training hangs — check the in-process restart settings

## Enablement

### Fault tolerance (Slurm only)

#### Option 1: NeMo Run plugin (recommended)

```python
from megatron.bridge.recipes.run_plugins import FaultTolerancePlugin
import nemo_run as run
task = run.Script(...)
run_plugins = [
    FaultTolerancePlugin(
        enable_ft_package=True,
        calc_ft_timeouts=True,
        num_in_job_restarts=3,
        num_job_retries_on_failure=2,
        initial_rank_heartbeat_timeout=1800,
        rank_heartbeat_timeout=300,
    )
]
run.run(task, plugins=run_plugins, executor=executor)
```

| Plugin parameter | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `num_in_job_restarts` | 3 | Max restarts within same job |
| `num_job_retries_on_failure` | 2 | Max new job launches on failure |
| `initial_rank_heartbeat_timeout` | 1800 | First heartbeat timeout (seconds) |
| `rank_heartbeat_timeout` | 300 | Subsequent heartbeat timeout (seconds) |

#### Option 2: Direct config + ft_launcher

```python
from megatron.bridge.training.config import FaultToleranceConfig
cfg.ft = FaultToleranceConfig(
    enable_ft_package=True,
    calc_ft_timeouts=True,
    simulate_fault=False,
    simulated_fault_type="random",
)
```

Launch with `ft_launcher` (not `torchrun`):

```bash
export GROUP_RANK=0  # required for non-Slurm
ft_launcher \
    --rdzv_backend=c10d --rdzv_endpoint=${MASTER_ADDR}:${MASTER_PORT} \
    --nnodes=${NUM_NODES} --nproc-per-node=${NUM_GPUS_PER_NODE} \
    --ft-rank_section_timeouts=setup:600,step:180,checkpointing:420 \
    --ft-rank_out_of_section_timeout=300 \
    your_training_script.py
```

| Config parameter | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `enable_ft_package` | False | Enable fault tolerance |
| `calc_ft_timeouts` | False | Auto-compute optimal timeouts |
| `simulate_fault` | False | Enable fault simulation for testing |
| `simulated_fault_type` | `"random"` | `"rank_hung"`, `"rank_killed"`, or `"random"` |
| `simulated_fault_rank` | None | Specific rank to fault (random if None) |
