## What it does

The skill indexes every shipped Megatron Bridge recipe. Give it your model name and size, GPU count and type, training goal (pretrain, SFT or PEFT) and sequence length, and it returns the best match: the recipe function name plus the entry-point command, followed by advice on parallelism and batch tuning.

It keeps two recipe families apart, and that distinction matters. Library recipes live under `src/megatron/bridge/recipes/` and run through `scripts/training/run_recipe.py` — these are for functional training. Benchmark recipes under `src/megatron/bridge/perf_recipes/` measure upper-bound throughput and should not be presented as production training configs. For a first Bridge smoke test the skill recommends `llama3_8b_pretrain_config` with `--dataset mock`; for normal SFT it points to a finetuning preset such as `--dataset squad` or `--dataset tulu3`. The `mock` preset is pretraining-only, so pairing it with SFT or PEFT will not work.

Another thing it does well: separating changes that alter the convergence contract from execution tuning. Editing the dataset, optimizer, global batch or sequence length creates a new convergence experiment, and calling that a throughput tweak is wrong. TP/PP/CP/EP, recompute, offload and CUDA graphs usually preserve the training objective. The resizing rules come with it: TP must divide `num_key_value_heads`, SP is enabled when TP > 1, and `micro_batch_size` is the first thing to cut on OOM.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-mbridge-recipe-recommender -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nemo-mbridge-recipe-recommender/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nemo-mbridge-recipe-recommender/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-mbridge-recipe-recommender -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nemo-mbridge-recipe-recommender/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-mbridge-recipe-recommender -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nemo-mbridge-recipe-recommender/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nemo-mbridge-recipe-recommender/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-mbridge-recipe-recommender -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- pick a starting recipe for a given model and GPU count
- resize parallelism to fit an allocated GPU pool
- tell a convergence change from execution tuning
- compare a library config against a benchmark config
- choose a dataset preset for pretrain, SFT or PEFT

## Example prompts
- Recommend a Megatron Bridge recipe for llama3 8B pretraining on 8 H100 GPUs
- I have 16 GPUs and a Claude 30B A3B model — which recipe should I use and how do I split TP and PP?
- Compare the library and benchmark configs for this model

# Auto Recipe — Recipe Index & Recommendation

This skill indexes every shipped recipe and helps users pick the right starting
config, adjust parallelism, and avoid common pitfalls.

## How to Use This Skill

1. Ask the user for: **model name/size**, **GPU count & type**, **training goal**
   (pretrain / SFT / PEFT), and **sequence length** (if non-default).
2. Look up the best-match recipe in the index below.
3. Recommend the recipe function name + entry-point command.
4. Provide adjustment advice (parallelism resizing, batch tuning, pitfalls).

## First Answer Checklist

When recommending recipes, always include these distinctions before the long
index details:

1. **Library recipes** under `src/megatron/bridge/recipes/` are for functional
   training and use `scripts/training/run_recipe.py`.
2. **Benchmark recipes** under `src/megatron/bridge/perf_recipes/` are for
   upper-bound throughput benchmarks. They own their canonical benchmark data
   and settings and should not be presented as production training recipes.
3. For a first-time Bridge smoke test, recommend `llama3_8b_pretrain_config`
   with mock data via `--dataset mock`.
4. For normal SFT recommendations, select a finetuning preset such as
   `--dataset squad` or `--dataset tulu3`; for pretrain and mock validation
   recommendations, use `--dataset mock`. Do not pair the pretraining-only
   `mock` preset with an SFT or PEFT mode.
5. After the recipe and dataset, give the required resizing rules: TP must
   divide `num_key_value_heads`, keep TP within one node unless using
