## What it does

The skill covers two separate mechanisms. Activation offloading moves activations, and optionally weights, off the GPU per transformer layer through `model.cpu_offloading*`. Optimizer offloading keeps Adam states (momentum and variance) on CPU with `HybridDeviceOptimizer`, configured under `optimizer.optimizer_cpu_offload`.

Inside you get a decision table for picking a mode, a parameter reference with defaults, config snippets and CLI overrides, a minimal recipe command, and unit tests for verification. Constraints are spelled out too. Activation offloading needs `pipeline_model_parallel_size = 1` and `recompute_granularity = None`, conflicts with CUDA graphs and `fine_grained_activation_offloading`, and requires `cpu_offloading_num_layers` between 0 and `num_layers-1`. Optimizer offloading needs `use_distributed_optimizer = True` but carries no PP or CUDA graph restrictions.

For large MoE models such as Qwen3-30B-A3B, activation offloading is blocked: with PP=1 every GPU holds all 48 layers, and weights plus optimizer states (~70 GB) exceed H100 80 GB. That is a reason to go straight to optimizer offloading. Offloading always adds overhead, so if throughput matters most, leave it off.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-mbridge-perf-cpu-offloading -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nemo-mbridge-perf-cpu-offloading/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nemo-mbridge-perf-cpu-offloading/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-mbridge-perf-cpu-offloading -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nemo-mbridge-perf-cpu-offloading/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-mbridge-perf-cpu-offloading -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nemo-mbridge-perf-cpu-offloading/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install NVIDIA/skills nemo-mbridge-perf-cpu-offloading
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nemo-mbridge-perf-cpu-offloading/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-mbridge-perf-cpu-offloading -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills --path skills/nemo-mbridge-perf-cpu-offloading
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nemo-mbridge-perf-cpu-offloading/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-mbridge-perf-cpu-offloading -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- cut GPU memory use by offloading activations to CPU
- move Adam optimizer states to CPU with HybridDeviceOptimizer
- tune the offloaded fraction of optimizer states to fit memory
- debug an OOM or crash after a CPU offloading config change
- confirm training runs without OOM and matches the non-offloaded loss

## Example prompts
- Enable optimizer CPU offloading in Megatron Bridge and check that the config validates
- Set up activation offloading for a model with PP=1 and list the constraints I have to drop
- Run the unit tests filtered by cpu_offload and explain what they cover

## What It Is

Two independent mechanisms to move data from GPU to CPU memory:

| Mechanism | Config namespace | What gets offloaded | PP restriction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Activation offloading | `model.cpu_offloading*` | Activations (and optionally weights) per transformer layer | PP must be 1 |
| Optimizer offloading | `optimizer.optimizer_cpu_offload` | Adam optimizer states (momentum + variance) via `HybridDeviceOptimizer` | None |

## Quick Decision

| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Large MoE model (30B+), needs PP > 1 | Optimizer offloading — activation offloading is blocked by PP=1 |
| Small/medium model, PP=1 fits, activation memory dominates | Activation offloading |
| Want tunable memory-speed tradeoff | Optimizer offloading with fractional `optimizer_offload_fraction` |
| Throughput is top priority | Don't enable — offloading always adds overhead |
| CUDA graphs are needed | Only optimizer offloading — activation offloading is incompatible |
| Memory pressure is moderate | Optimizer offload at 25–50% fraction for best efficiency |

## Enablement

### Optimizer CPU offloading (recommended for large models)

```python
cfg.optimizer.optimizer_cpu_offload = True
cfg.optimizer.optimizer_offload_fraction = 1.0
cfg.optimizer.overlap_cpu_optimizer_d2h_h2d = True
```

CLI overrides:

```bash
optimizer.optimizer_cpu_offload=True \
optimizer.optimizer_offload_fraction=0.5 \
optimizer.overlap_cpu_optimizer_d2h_h2d=True
```

### Activation CPU offloading (small/medium models only)
