## What it does

The skill answers parallelism questions for NeMo AutoModel: FSDP2, MegatronFSDP or DDP, plus tensor, pipeline, context and expert parallelism settings. Parallelism there runs through a single `MeshContext` object holding device meshes, strategy configs and axis names. The skill knows that layout, so the agent does not have to inspect the repository for every answer.

Inside is a strategy decision tree and a walkthrough of the `distributed` section in the recipe YAML. For tensor and pipeline parallelism it recommends `strategy: fsdp2` with `tp_size` and `pp_size`, while `dp_size` stays unset because it is inferred as `world_size / (tp_size * pp_size * cp_size)`. MoE models with expert parallelism need `ep_size > 1`, which creates a separate `moe_mesh`.

The strategies differ in what they support, and that is the part worth remembering. MegatronFSDP has no pipeline parallelism, no expert parallelism and no `sequence_parallel` — reach for `fsdp2` if you need any of them. DDP covers simple data parallelism only. Also, `ep_size` must divide `dp_size * cp_size`, or the config will not line up.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-automodel-distributed-training -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nemo-automodel-distributed-training/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nemo-automodel-distributed-training/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-automodel-distributed-training -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nemo-automodel-distributed-training/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-automodel-distributed-training -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nemo-automodel-distributed-training/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install NVIDIA/skills nemo-automodel-distributed-training
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nemo-automodel-distributed-training/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-automodel-distributed-training -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills --path skills/nemo-automodel-distributed-training
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nemo-automodel-distributed-training/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-automodel-distributed-training -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- pick a distributed training strategy for a given GPU layout
- write a minimal YAML for tensor and pipeline parallelism
- debug a multi-node run that fails at startup
- set up expert parallelism for a MoE model
- find out which strategies skip PP, EP and sequence_parallel

## Example prompts
- Which NeMo AutoModel strategy fits a 70B+ model across several nodes?
- Show me the minimal YAML for fsdp2 with tp_size and pp_size
- I need expert parallelism for a MoE model — what goes in the distributed section?

# Distributed Training in NeMo AutoModel

## Purpose

NeMo AutoModel uses PyTorch-native distributed training.
All parallelism is orchestrated through a single `MeshContext` object that
holds device meshes, strategy configs, and axis names.
<!-- NVSkills catalog signing requested after PR #2937 (2026-07-31). -->

## Instructions

For conceptual distributed-training questions, answer directly from the quick
patterns in this skill without inspecting the repository. Start with the
strategy choice, then list only the YAML fields and constraints relevant to the
question.

Use direct action verbs in the final answer: recommend the strategy, show the
minimal YAML, state the sizing constraint, and name the unsupported strategies.
Do not discuss model onboarding, recipes, Slurm, SkyPilot, or checkpointing
unless the user asks.

## Examples

### TP plus PP for a large multi-node model

Recommend `strategy: fsdp2`. Mention `tp_size`, `pp_size`, `cp_size`,
`ep_size`, and the `pipeline` sub-config. State that `dp_size` is inferred from
`world_size / (tp_size * pp_size * cp_size)`.

```yaml
distributed:
  strategy: fsdp2
  tp_size: 8
  pp_size: 4
  cp_size: 1
  ep_size: 1
  pipeline:
    pp_schedule: interleaved1f1b
    pp_microbatch_size: 1
```

### MoE expert parallelism

Recommend `strategy: fsdp2` with `ep_size > 1`. Say this creates a separate
`moe_mesh`; include the `moe` sub-config when relevant; state that `ep_size`
must divide `dp_size * cp_size`. Do not recommend `megatron_fsdp` or `ddp`.

```yaml
distributed:
  strategy: fsdp2
  ep_size: 8
  moe:
    reshard_after_forward: false
```

### MegatronFSDP limitations

Say no for pipeline parallelism, expert parallelism, and `sequence_parallel`.
Recommend `fsdp2` for PP, EP, or `sequence_parallel`; mention that DDP is only
simple data parallelism.
