Runs a narrative nonfiction book through promise, metaphor, reader arc and exercises. Useful when a manuscript spans weeks.

## What it does

The skill splits book work into three stages. First the foundation: who the reader is, what they gain, which metaphor carries the text, and where they enter and exit the journey. Then chapters, built as hook, why it matters, teaching, evidence, exercises, bridge. Last comes an integrity pass over the whole manuscript — does the promise land, does the metaphor still hold, do the exercises build on each other.

Five modes do the drafting and editing, invoked with lines like "Check voice consistency" or "Design exercises for". Each mode loads one file from `references/` and leaves the rest alone, which keeps the context budget in check. Reveal Engineer is the exception: read the index `reveal-engineering.md` first, pick one of four reveal patterns, then load only that pattern's file.

Claude Code keeps no memory between sessions, so the project state lives in `book-blueprint.md`. At the start the skill reads that file plus recent notes in `sessions/`; at the end it asks for a short summary at `sessions/YYYY-MM-DD_topic-slug.md`. When the promise or the central metaphor shifts, the blueprint gets updated right away — skip that and the next session builds on a stale version.

Pure fiction, academic papers and reporting without a transformation arc are out of scope.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rhavekost/author-toolkit --skill narrative-nonfiction -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/narrative-nonfiction/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/narrative-nonfiction/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rhavekost/author-toolkit --skill narrative-nonfiction -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/narrative-nonfiction/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rhavekost/author-toolkit --skill narrative-nonfiction -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/narrative-nonfiction/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install rhavekost/author-toolkit narrative-nonfiction
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/narrative-nonfiction/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rhavekost/author-toolkit --skill narrative-nonfiction -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/rhavekost/author-toolkit --path skills/narrative-nonfiction
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/narrative-nonfiction/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rhavekost/author-toolkit --skill narrative-nonfiction -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/rhavekost/author-toolkit/tree/HEAD/skills/narrative-nonfiction/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- state the book's promise in one sentence
- check that the central metaphor still matches the advice
- map the reader's before and after states
- match exercises to the stage of the transformation
- spot chapters that read as preachy or too abstract

## Example prompts
- Check voice consistency in chapter three
- Evaluate the teaching in this chapter and tell me what's missing
- Design exercises for the chapter on first steps

# Narrative Nonfiction Workshop

Workflow for self-help and prescriptive nonfiction using narrative elements and metaphors to guide reader transformation.

**Core concept:** Reader is protagonist; book is map and method; transformation is the contract.

## Session Continuity

Book projects span weeks or months. Claude has no memory between sessions, so the project's blueprint document is your persistent state.

- **At session start:** Read `book-blueprint.md` (or whatever the project calls its blueprint) before doing any other work. Skim recent files in `sessions/` for unresolved threads.
- **At session end:** Write a brief note at `sessions/YYYY-MM-DD_topic-slug.md` summarizing what was done, decisions made, and the stopping point. Two to five sentences is enough.
- **When foundations shift:** Update the blueprint immediately when promise, central metaphor, reader-arc stages, or reveal structure change. The blueprint is the source of truth, not a one-time template.
- **Surface unresolved questions:** At the start of new work, list questions left open from prior sessions and ask the user which to address before continuing.

## When to Use

This skill is for:
- ✅ Self-help and prescriptive nonfiction books
- ✅ Memoirs with lessons or transformation arcs
- ✅ Books using extended metaphors or narrative framing
- ✅ Practical guides that include storytelling elements
- ✅ Reader journey design (before state → after state)
- ✅ Structural-argument nonfiction (books that reframe how readers understand a system or category)

## When NOT to Use

This skill is NOT for:
- ❌ Pure fiction (novels, short stories) - use `fiction-workshop` instead
- ❌ Academic writing or research papers - different conventions
- ❌ Straight journalism or reporting - no transformation arc
- ❌ Technical documentation or how-to guides without story elements
- ❌ Business books focused purely on data/case studies without reader journey

---

## Stage 1: Foundation Building

**Goal:** Establish promise, metaphor system, and transformation arc.

### Initial Questions

1. Target reader? (Demographics + psychographics)
