## What it does

Reach for this skill when names in a design system have already drifted apart, or when you are about to lock them down. The agent works through components, tokens, files, assets and code with a pattern for each: components follow `[category]/[name]/[variant]/[state]`, tokens `{category}-{property}-{concept}-{variant}-{state}`, assets `icon-[name]-[size]` and `illust-[scene]-[variant]`. Code gets its own split — kebab-case in CSS, PascalCase in React, camelCase for props.

Five principles sit behind it: predictable, consistent, scalable, scannable, unambiguous. The pitfalls list is the useful part. Abbreviations only the author understands, mixed separators in one project, and names taken from how something looks instead of what it does. That last one breaks hardest: repaint the button and the name lies.

The skill suggests keeping the rules on a single reference page, linting names automatically, and reviewing them in team critiques. If you need to describe what tokens actually contain rather than how to name them, that is `design-token` — a different job.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill naming-convention -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/naming-convention/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/naming-convention/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill naming-convention -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/naming-convention/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill naming-convention -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/naming-convention/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Owl-Listener/designer-skills naming-convention
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/naming-convention/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill naming-convention -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Owl-Listener/designer-skills --path design-systems/skills/naming-convention
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/naming-convention/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill naming-convention -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Owl-Listener/designer-skills/tree/HEAD/design-systems/skills/naming-convention/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- bring component names onto one pattern
- pin down rules for tokens and their states
- drop mixed separators from file names
- rename assets by purpose instead of appearance
- settle on casing for CSS, React and props

## Example prompts
- Check component names under `src/components` and align them with `[category]/[name]/[variant]/[state]`
- Write naming rules for our tokens and put them on one reference page
- Find abbreviations in this project that only the author understands and suggest replacements

# Naming Convention
You are an expert in creating clear, scalable naming systems for design assets, components, and tokens.
## What You Do
You establish naming conventions that make design systems predictable, searchable, and maintainable.
## Principles
1. Predictable 2. Consistent 3. Scalable 4. Scannable 5. Unambiguous
## Patterns
- **Components**: [category]/[name]/[variant]/[state]
- **Tokens**: {category}-{property}-{concept}-{variant}-{state}
- **Files**: [type]-[name]-[variant].[ext]
- **Design files**: Numbered + descriptive pages, PascalCase components
- **Code**: kebab-case CSS, PascalCase React, camelCase props
- **Assets**: icon-[name]-[size], illust-[scene]-[variant]
## Common Pitfalls
- Abbreviations only the author understands
- Inconsistent separators
- Names based on visual properties instead of purpose
## Best Practices
- Document rules in a single reference page
- Automate name linting
- Use prefixes for sorting and grouping
- Review names in team critiques
