Tells the agent which n8n-mcp tool to call and with what parameters, so nodeType formats and workflow JSON don't break.

## What it does

The skill groups n8n-mcp server tools into categories: node discovery, configuration validation, workflow management, a template library, data tables, folders, credentials, instance security auditing, agents and the instance catalog. Each category comes with a call order. The usual chain runs `search_nodes` on a keyword, then `get_node` for operations and properties, and `get_node` with `mode: "docs"` when you want readable documentation.

A separate section covers `nodeType` formats. Search and validation tools want the short prefix such as `nodes-base.slack`; workflow creation and editing tools want the full `n8n-nodes-base.slack`. `search_nodes` returns both, so there is nothing to convert by hand. Three more rules apply to node JSON: never leave a `credentials` block with an invented ID, generate UUID v4 values for the node `id`, and take the current `typeVersion` from `get_node` instead of hardcoding a remembered one.

Some tools need `N8N_MCP_ACCESS_TOKEN`: agent management and resolving live dropdown values. When a credential ID is unknown, list real ones first with `n8n_manage_credentials` and the `list` action. A fake ID in the `credentials` block disables the credential selector in the n8n UI for good, and the node has to be rebuilt from scratch — guessing IDs is not worth it.

## Requirements
- Works with: n8n

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add czlonkowski/n8n-skills --skill n8n-mcp-tools-expert -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/n8n-mcp-tools-expert/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/n8n-mcp-tools-expert/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add czlonkowski/n8n-skills --skill n8n-mcp-tools-expert -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/n8n-mcp-tools-expert/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add czlonkowski/n8n-skills --skill n8n-mcp-tools-expert -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/n8n-mcp-tools-expert/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install czlonkowski/n8n-skills n8n-mcp-tools-expert
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/n8n-mcp-tools-expert/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add czlonkowski/n8n-skills --skill n8n-mcp-tools-expert -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/czlonkowski/n8n-skills --path skills/n8n-mcp-tools-expert
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/n8n-mcp-tools-expert/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add czlonkowski/n8n-skills --skill n8n-mcp-tools-expert -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/czlonkowski/n8n-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/n8n-mcp-tools-expert/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find the right node by keyword and see its operations
- validate a node configuration before running the workflow
- deploy a ready template into your own instance
- organize workflows into folders
- audit the security of an n8n instance

## Example prompts
- Find the Slack node and list its operations
- Validate this node's configuration and fix the errors
- Create a workflow from a template and put it in a folder

name: n8n-mcp-tools-expert
description: Expert guide for using n8n-mcp MCP tools effectively. Use when searching for nodes, validating configurations, accessing templates, managing workflows, organizing workflows into folders, managing credentials, auditing instance security, or using any n8n-mcp tool. Provides tool selection guidance, parameter formats, and common patterns. IMPORTANT — Always consult this skill before calling any n8n-mcp tool — it prevents common mistakes like wrong nodeType formats, incorrect parameter structures, and inefficient tool usage. If the user mentions n8n, workflows, nodes, or automation and you have n8n MCP tools available, use this skill first.
