## What it does

An n8n node fails and the whole workflow stops. Whoever called it gets nothing useful back. That default is wrong for webhook APIs and scheduled jobs, because the integration quiets down with no message anywhere. This skill gives the agent rules for making failures loud and structured.

For API-shaped workflows the agent wires the error output of every node that can throw — HTTP, database, third-party API, file work — and ends both paths at `Respond to Webhook`. Status codes follow the cause: caller's mistake is 4xx, yours is 5xx. Unattended workflows get a workflow-level error workflow through `update_workflow` and `setWorkflowSettings.errorWorkflow`, from n8n 2.29.0. Network nodes also pick up `retryOnFail`, with `maxTries` up to 5 and `waitBetweenTries` up to 5000 ms.

Reference files cover response shapes, node error outputs and templates. Input validation uses a Set-node pattern: lift the example structure and edit the checks for your own payload. Skip the error branches and the error workflow, and silent failure is what you are left with.

## Requirements
- Works with: n8n

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add n8n-io/skills --skill n8n-error-handling-official -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/n8n-error-handling-official/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/n8n-error-handling-official/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add n8n-io/skills --skill n8n-error-handling-official -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/n8n-error-handling-official/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add n8n-io/skills --skill n8n-error-handling-official -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/n8n-error-handling-official/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install n8n-io/skills n8n-error-handling-official
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/n8n-error-handling-official/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add n8n-io/skills --skill n8n-error-handling-official -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/n8n-io/skills --path skills/n8n-error-handling-official
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/n8n-error-handling-official/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add n8n-io/skills --skill n8n-error-handling-official -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/n8n-io/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/n8n-error-handling-official/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- wire error outputs on every node that can fail
- match the response status code to the failure cause
- attach an error workflow to scheduled jobs
- absorb transient failures with retries
- return a structured error body instead of a plain-text placeholder

## Example prompts
- Build the webhook API: wire every network node's error output and send both paths to `Respond to Webhook`.
- Attach an error workflow to this one via `setWorkflowSettings.errorWorkflow`.
- Set `retryOnFail` on the HTTP nodes and show how to validate input through the Set pattern.

# n8n Error Handling

Default n8n node behavior: error → workflow halts → caller gets nothing useful. For unattended workflows (webhook APIs, scheduled jobs, queue workers), that default is wrong. The symptom is "the integration just stopped working" with no log, no message, no clue.

This skill is about handling errors so failures are loud, structured, and recoverable. Or best case scenario, handled in a way where it self heals.

## Non-negotiables

For any **API-shaped workflow** (webhook trigger paired with `Respond to Webhook`):

1. **Every fallible node's error output is wired, and both paths end at a `Respond to Webhook`.** No hanging error branches, or the caller would see a timeout. "Fallible" = HTTP, DB, third-party API, file operation, anything that throws.
2. **Status code maps to cause.** Caller's fault → 4xx, your fault → 5xx. A 200 default on an error path produces silent failure: caller thinks success, processes empty data.

For any **unattended workflow** (scheduled, cron, queue-driven, agent tool):
3. **Set a workflow-level error workflow.** Catches what escapes per-node handling: timeouts, crashes between nodes, errors in unwired nodes. Set it via `update_workflow` `setWorkflowSettings.errorWorkflow` (n8n 2.29.0+); the target must be a published workflow containing an active Error Trigger, or the update is rejected. See `references/ERROR_WORKFLOWS.md`.

## Strong defaults

- **Error response bodies are structured.** Not just "Internal Server Error". Use `{ "error": "<short identifier>", "message": "<human-readable>" }`. See `references/RESPONSE_SHAPES.md`.
- **Network-calling nodes have `retryOnFail` configured.** Transient 429s and upstream blips get absorbed before reaching the error path. See "Self-healing on transient failures" below.
