# n8n-debugging-official

Diagnoses failing n8n workflows, execution errors, and unexpected node output. It helps pinpoint why an execution halted or why expressions return null.

## What it does

The skill follows an order of cheap checks before deeper inspection. It looks up the execution error via `get_workflow_execution`, inspects wire connections through `get_workflow_details`, and validates node settings using `validate_node_config`.

Workflows frequently fail because an intermediate node replaces `$json` with its own payload. Downstream nodes then resolve `$json.x` to null. The skill spots this upstream stripping and fixes expressions by referencing the source node explicitly with `$('Earlier Node').item.json.x`.

Pay attention to dropdown types in the n8n interface. The UI treats `object` and `array` as separate types in nodes like Set or Filter, so passing an array into an object slot causes a validation error even if JavaScript accepts it.

## Requirements
- Works with: n8n

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add n8n-io/skills --skill n8n-debugging-official -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/n8n-debugging-official/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/n8n-debugging-official/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add n8n-io/skills --skill n8n-debugging-official -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/n8n-debugging-official/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add n8n-io/skills --skill n8n-debugging-official -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/n8n-debugging-official/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install n8n-io/skills n8n-debugging-official
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/n8n-debugging-official/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add n8n-io/skills --skill n8n-debugging-official -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/n8n-io/skills --path skills/n8n-debugging-official
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/n8n-debugging-official/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add n8n-io/skills --skill n8n-debugging-official -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/n8n-io/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/n8n-debugging-official/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- diagnose failed executions using `get_workflow_execution`
- fix stripped `$json` fields downstream from aggregate nodes
- validate node parameters with `validate_node_config`
- resolve UI type mismatches between `object` and `array`

## Example prompts
- My n8n workflow stopped on error, check the execution data and find out why
- Downstream node receives null instead of json data, inspect the workflow
- Run validate_node_config on the failing node to check missing parameters

# n8n Debugging

When something breaks, the cause is almost always:

1. **Parameter misconfiguration** (wrong value, wrong type, missing field).
2. **Stale assumptions** (different version, different behavior than you remember).
3. **Paths misconfigured or misconnected** (wrong output index, wrong merge input, missing wire, IF/Switch wired to the wrong branch).
4. **Upstream data stripped** (an intermediate node replaced `$json` with its own output, so downstream `$json.x` resolves to null even though "it should be there"). Fix: reference the stable upstream node by name (`$('Earlier Node').item.json.x`).
5. **Item context lost** (after Aggregate, Execute Once, or Split Out flows, n8n can't pair `.item` references deterministically, error reads like "The expression is referencing... multiple matching items"). Fix: Merge node to re-establish context, `$input.all().find(...)` for explicit lookup, or redesign to keep item correspondence stable (e.g., split into stateless sub-workflows).
6. **Logical errors** (the wires are right and the parameters are right, but the workflow does the wrong thing, same as a logic bug in code).
7. **Genuine bug** (rare but real).

Diagnose systematically: cheap checks first, deeper investigation only when those fail.

## Non-negotiable

**Believe the user.** "This isn't working" means something isn't behaving as they expect, even if they describe the symptom imprecisely. Don't dismiss with "it should work" or "are you sure you're doing X?". Investigate first: the user is truth about what *should* happen, execution data and source are truth about what *is* happening. When you can't find the cause, "I don't know yet" beats a plausible-sounding fabrication.

## Strong defaults (cause to cheap check)

Match cause to cheap check, in order of likelihood:

1. **Parameter misconfiguration** → re-fetch via `get_node_types`, compare against `get_workflow_details`, look for type/value/missing-field mismatches. `validate_node_config` on the failing node alone returns per-parameter errors directly; faster than eyeballing the diff for nodes with deep / conditional shapes.
<!-- TEMPORARY: when instance metadata tool is added, change asking user to just using the tool -->
2. **Stale assumptions** → ask the n8n version, ask when the user last updated the skills plugin, suspect drift if behavior contradicts the skill.
