# context-engineering

A skill about how an agent's context window gets filled, pruned and shared. Useful when an agent drifts or forgets constraints mid-task.

## What it does

The skill distills context-engineering practice from 2024–2025: choosing what loads at boot versus on demand, sizing an install or always-loaded file, planning compaction and summarization, deciding between a single agent and subagents, engineering handoffs, and picking a tool loadout. It opens with a mental model and a set of principles, then explains why reliability drops well before the window is full — quadratic attention, the lost-in-the-middle position curve, degradation on long inputs.

The author labels it provisional: a historical snapshot, not a normative guide. On any conflict, current OpenRig skills, explicit user rulings and measured practice win. Treat the compaction advice, the minimal-upfront versus broad-orientation question, context ceilings and single-agent versus multi-agent guidance as the parts most in need of re-verification. Numbers like degradation thresholds are tied to specific models and dates; the mechanism outlives the figure.

It is not for rewording a prompt's tone, pinning a model, or debugging business logic. If your agent repeats itself or loses constraints halfway through a task, this is a reason to look at what you feed it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvschwarz/openrig --skill context-engineering -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/context-engineering/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/context-engineering/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvschwarz/openrig --skill context-engineering -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/context-engineering/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvschwarz/openrig --skill context-engineering -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/context-engineering/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mvschwarz/openrig context-engineering
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/context-engineering/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvschwarz/openrig --skill context-engineering -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mvschwarz/openrig --path skills/_canonical/process/context-engineering
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/context-engineering/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvschwarz/openrig --skill context-engineering -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mvschwarz/openrig/tree/HEAD/skills/_canonical/process/context-engineering/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- decide what loads at agent boot and what waits for on-demand lookup
- work out why an agent repeats steps it already finished
- plan compaction and summarization for a long session
- choose between one agent and a set of subagents
- design a handoff from one agent to another

## Example prompts
- read the context-engineering skill and tell me what is sitting in my boot context for no reason
- my agent forgets constraints mid-task — walk through context-engineering and find where the signal is lost
- use context-engineering to help me decide: single agent or subagents for this task

# Traditional Context Engineering — 2024–2025 Snapshot

## Status: provisional historical research snapshot

This skill is a provisional historical research snapshot of context-engineering practice as
published in 2024–2025. It is NOT normative. Do not apply it prescriptively to current frontier
models without re-verification. On any conflict, OpenRig current skills, explicit user rulings,
and directly measured OpenRig practice PREVAIL over this document. Treat these areas as
particularly suspect pending re-verification: compaction/summarization guidance, minimal-upfront
versus broad orientation, just-in-time lookup assumptions, fixed context ceilings, and
single-agent versus multi-agent advice.

Curated distillation of the best publicly available expertise on context engineering for coding
agents, drawn from primary sources at Anthropic, OpenAI, and leading practitioners (Manus,
Cognition, Chroma, LangChain, Drew Breunig, and others). Load on the moments the description
names; it is deliberately not part of any base walk.

## 1. The mental model: what context engineering is

**Definition.** Context engineering is "the set of strategies for curating and maintaining the
optimal set of tokens (information) during LLM inference" — everything that lands in the window:
system instructions, tool definitions, retrieved data, message history, and tool outputs, not
just the prompt text (Anthropic, *Effective context engineering for AI agents*). Andrej
Karpathy's framing, popularized via LangChain: "the delicate art and science of filling the
