## What it does

The skill hands the agent a compression procedure it can follow instead of improvising. A session that runs long gets folded into a summary with fixed sections: session intent, files modified, decisions made, current state, next steps. Everything sits in one `SKILL.md`, which walks through three strategies — anchored iterative summarization, opaque compression, regenerative full summary.

The target is tokens per task, not tokens per request. Lose a file path or an error string in the summary and the agent re-reads everything, spending more than the compression saved. Anchored mode avoids that by summarizing only the newly truncated span and merging it into the existing summary, so detail from earlier cycles survives. Opaque compression reaches far higher ratios, but checking what it kept takes probe-based tests. For coding agents the skill recommends a sliding window with structured summaries.

How much you get out of it depends on the cost of a re-read. In a short session with cheap re-fetching there is little to gain. Note the overlap with neighbouring skills in the same collection: `context-optimization` covers masking and prefix caching, `self-managed-context` covers a model deciding to rewrite its own context, and this one owns only what the replacement text must preserve.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add muratcankoylan/Agent-Skills-for-Context-Engineering --skill context-compression -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/context-compression/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/context-compression/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add muratcankoylan/Agent-Skills-for-Context-Engineering --skill context-compression -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/context-compression/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add muratcankoylan/Agent-Skills-for-Context-Engineering --skill context-compression -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/context-compression/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install muratcankoylan/Agent-Skills-for-Context-Engineering context-compression
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/context-compression/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add muratcankoylan/Agent-Skills-for-Context-Engineering --skill context-compression -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/muratcankoylan/Agent-Skills-for-Context-Engineering --path skills/context-compression
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/context-compression/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add muratcankoylan/Agent-Skills-for-Context-Engineering --skill context-compression -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- compress a session that has run past the context window
- track which files the agent created and which it edited
- produce a handoff summary another agent can pick up
- decide when compression fires: threshold, sliding window or task boundary
- spot compression that went too aggressive because the agent keeps re-reading files

## Example prompts
- Compress the session so far into the usual sections: intent, files changed with paths, decisions, next steps.
- We're near the context limit. Switch to the sliding window and update the summary instead of rebuilding it.
- The agent forgot which files it edited — check the file list in the summary and fill the gaps.

# Context Compression Strategies

When agent sessions generate millions of tokens of conversation history, compression becomes mandatory. The naive approach is aggressive compression to minimize tokens per request. The correct optimization target is tokens per task: total tokens consumed to complete a task, including re-fetching costs when compression loses critical information.

## When to Activate

Activate this skill when:
- Agent sessions exceed context window limits
- Codebases exceed context windows (5M+ token systems)
- Designing conversation summarization strategies
- Debugging cases where agents "forget" what files they modified
- Building evaluation frameworks for compression quality
- Creating durable handoff summaries that preserve decisions, files, risks, and next actions

Do not activate this skill for adjacent work owned by other skills:
- General token-efficiency tactics such as masking, prefix caching, or partitioning: `context-optimization`.
- Diagnosing why a long context is failing before choosing a mitigation: `context-degradation`.
- Writing raw outputs, logs, or plans to files without summarizing them: `filesystem-context`.
- Designing long-term semantic memory across sessions: `memory-systems`.
- The model deciding when and where to rewrite its own context: `self-managed-context`. This skill still owns what the replacement text must preserve.

## Core Concepts

Context compression trades token savings against information loss. Select from three production-ready approaches based on session characteristics:
