# msbuild-antipatterns

Audits MSBuild project files and targets to surface anti-patterns. Helpful when reviewing .csproj and .fsproj files for maintainability without unwanted automated edits.

## What it does

This skill evaluates project and target files against a structured catalog of MSBuild smells. It flags `<Exec>` tasks used instead of `<MakeDir>` or `<Copy>`, unquoted condition expressions, hardcoded absolute machine paths, and redundant property overrides that duplicate .NET SDK defaults. For F# projects, it validates file sequencing in `<Compile>` to prevent ordering bugs.

The review mode is strictly read-only by contract. The agent returns prioritized findings with clear impacts instead of editing project files unprompted. This keeps build logic safe until you decide to apply changes.

Do not invoke this skill to migrate legacy projects to SDK style; the dotnet repository provides `msbuild-modernization` for full rewrites. Non-MSBuild build setups are also excluded from its scope.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill msbuild-antipatterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/msbuild-antipatterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/msbuild-antipatterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill msbuild-antipatterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/msbuild-antipatterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill msbuild-antipatterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/msbuild-antipatterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills msbuild-antipatterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/msbuild-antipatterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill msbuild-antipatterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-msbuild/skills/msbuild-antipatterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/msbuild-antipatterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill msbuild-antipatterns -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dotnet/skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/dotnet-msbuild/skills/msbuild-antipatterns/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- replace shell operations in `<Exec>` with built-in MSBuild tasks
- catch unquoted conditions that fail on empty property evaluations
- eliminate hardcoded system paths in favor of MSBuild properties
- strip redundant property definitions already provided by SDK defaults
- check file order in F# projects to satisfy module dependency rules

## Example prompts
- Audit MyApp.csproj for MSBuild anti-patterns
- Review Directory.Build.targets for portability risks and path issues
- Check Library.fsproj file ordering and list any anti-patterns with fixes

name: msbuild-antipatterns
description: "DO NOT INVOKE when the primary request explicitly asks to convert, migrate, modernize, or rewrite a legacy/old-style project to SDK style; use msbuild-modernization. Migration prompts often mention ToolsVersion, explicit Compile/Reference entries, packages.config, or Microsoft.CSharp.targets, but merely reviewing or auditing a file that contains those patterns remains in scope here. USE FOR broad review, audit, lint, or maintainability/correctness checks of project/build files, including custom targets; prioritized cross-cutting findings; discrete anti-patterns; F# ordering/FS0039; cross-platform paths; and focused Import safety verdicts. Review/audit is analysis-only unless fixes are requested. For concrete property/item defects use property-patterns/item-management; use target-authoring for implementation and extension-points for NuGet auto-import/layout discovery. Exclude non-MSBuild systems."

# MSBuild Anti-Pattern Catalog

A numbered catalog of common MSBuild anti-patterns. Each entry follows the format:

- **Smell**: What to look for
- **Why it's bad**: Impact on builds, maintainability, or correctness
- **Fix**: Concrete transformation

Use this catalog when scanning project files for improvements.

## Review output contract

For review, audit, maintainability, or correctness-risk requests:

1. Do not edit files unless the user explicitly asks for fixes.
2. Return prioritized findings grounded in the supplied file, with impact and a targeted recommendation.
3. Separate confirmed defects from conditional risks and already-correct patterns.
4. Keep the final answer as the review; do not replace it with a terse summary of changes.

## AP-01: `<Exec>` for Operations That Have Built-in Tasks

**Smell**: `<Exec Command="mkdir ..." />`, `<Exec Command="copy ..." />`, `<Exec Command="del ..." />`

**Why it's bad**: Built-in tasks are cross-platform, support incremental build, emit structured logging, and handle errors consistently. `<Exec>` is opaque to MSBuild.

```xml
<!-- BAD -->
<Target Name="PrepareOutput">
  <Exec Command="mkdir $(OutputPath)logs" />
  <Exec Command="copy config.json $(OutputPath)" />
  <Exec Command="del $(IntermediateOutputPath)*.tmp" />
</Target>
<!-- GOOD -->
<Target Name="PrepareOutput">
  <MakeDir Directories="$(OutputPath)logs" />
  <Copy SourceFiles="config.json" DestinationFolder="$(OutputPath)" />
  <Delete Files="@(TempFiles)" />
</Target>
```

**Built-in task alternatives:**

| Shell Command | MSBuild Task |
|--------------|--------------|
| `mkdir` | `<MakeDir>` |
| `copy` / `cp` | `<Copy>` |
| `del` / `rm` | `<Delete>` |
| `move` / `mv` | `<Move>` |
| `echo text > file` | `<WriteLinesToFile>` |
| `touch` | `<Touch>` |
