## What it does

The skill walks through the anatomy of an Agent Skill. A required `SKILL.md` with YAML frontmatter, plus optional `scripts/`, `references/` and `assets/` folders. The description in the metadata has to stay under 200 characters, or Claude won't know when to activate the skill.

Short files are the whole point. `SKILL.md` under 150 lines, every referenced markdown file under 150 too, and anything longer gets split. That's how progressive disclosure works: the agent pulls only the relevant files into context instead of reading one long file. Scripts have no length limit, but the author recommends Node.js or Python over bash because bash is poorly supported on Windows. Python scripts need a `requirements.txt`, and environment variables follow a fixed lookup order from `process.env` down to project-local `.env` files.

Skills aren't documentation, they're instructions the agent acts on. Related topics belong in one skill rather than several tiny ones. Tests for scripts aren't optional here — a skill without them breaks the first time someone else runs it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mrgoonie/claudekit-skills --skill skill-creator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/skill-creator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/skill-creator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mrgoonie/claudekit-skills --skill skill-creator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/skill-creator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mrgoonie/claudekit-skills --skill skill-creator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/skill-creator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mrgoonie/claudekit-skills skill-creator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/skill-creator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mrgoonie/claudekit-skills --skill skill-creator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mrgoonie/claudekit-skills --path .claude/skills/skill-creator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/skill-creator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mrgoonie/claudekit-skills --skill skill-creator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mrgoonie/claudekit-skills/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/skill-creator/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- scaffold a new skill without missing required fields
- trim a bloated `SKILL.md` back under 150 lines
- split a long reference doc into several files
- move repeated code into a tested script
- fix a description that stops the skill from auto-activating

## Example prompts
- create a skill for our database migrations
- rework this skill: SKILL.md got too long, split it into references
- add a Python script to this skill and write tests for it

# Skill Creator

This skill provides guidance for creating effective skills.

## About Skills

Skills are modular, self-contained packages that extend Claude's capabilities by providing
specialized knowledge, workflows, and tools. Think of them as "onboarding guides" for specific
domains or tasks—they transform Claude from a general-purpose agent into a specialized agent
equipped with procedural knowledge that no model can fully possess.

**IMPORTANT:**
- Skills are not documentation, they are practical instructions for Claude Code to use the tools, packages, plugins or APIs to achieve the tasks.
- Each skill teaches Claude how to perform a specific development task, not what a tool does.
- Claude Code can activate multiple skills automatically to achieve the user's request.

### What Skills Provide

1. Specialized workflows - Multi-step procedures for specific domains
2. Tool integrations - Instructions for working with specific file formats or APIs
3. Domain expertise - Company-specific knowledge, schemas, business logic
4. Bundled resources - Scripts, references, and assets for complex and repetitive tasks

### Anatomy of a Skill

Every skill consists of a required SKILL.md file and optional bundled resources:

```
.claude/skills/
└── skill-name/
    ├── SKILL.md (required)
    │   ├── YAML frontmatter metadata (required)
    │   │   ├── name: (required)
    │   │   ├── description: (required)
    │   │   ├── license: (optional)
    │   │   └── version: (optional)
    │   └── Markdown instructions (required)
    └── Bundled Resources (optional)
        ├── scripts/          - Executable code (Python/Bash/etc.)
        ├── references/       - Documentation intended to be loaded into context as needed
        └── assets/           - Files used in output (templates, icons, fonts, etc.)
```

#### Requirements (**IMPORTANT**)

- Skill should be combined into specific topics, for example: `cloudflare`, `cloudflare-r2`, `cloudflare-workers`, `docker`, `gcloud` should be combined into `devops`
- `SKILL.md` should be **less than 150 lines** and include the references of related markdown files and scripts.
- Each script or referenced markdown file should be also **less than 150 lines**, remember that you can always split them into multiple files (**progressive disclosure** principle).

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the a3ab4fa8d3701a98 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
