## What it does

This skill queries the Mouser Search API by keyword, manufacturer part number or Mouser part number. Results can include stock, lead time, minimum order quantity, order multiples, price breaks, lifecycle status and parametric attributes. Searches can also filter by manufacturer or in-stock status.

For distributor cross-references, it uses `ManufacturerPartNumber` rather than the prefixed Mouser number. The API returns prices, stock quantities and discontinued flags as strings, so a workflow must parse them before comparing values. That is a reason to check data handling in your automation.

Set `MOUSER_SEARCH_API_KEY` before running the skill. It works with KiCad for BOM creation and part selection, while `--mpn-list` starts batch MPN processing without a KiCad project. Mouser blocks automated PDF downloads, so the documentation recommends the DigiKey API for datasheets.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aklofas/kicad-happy --skill mouser -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mouser/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mouser/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aklofas/kicad-happy --skill mouser -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mouser/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aklofas/kicad-happy --skill mouser -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mouser/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aklofas/kicad-happy mouser
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mouser/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aklofas/kicad-happy --skill mouser -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aklofas/kicad-happy --path skills/mouser
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mouser/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aklofas/kicad-happy --skill mouser -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aklofas/kicad-happy/tree/HEAD/skills/mouser/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find a component by manufacturer part number
- check Mouser stock and price breaks
- filter parts that are in stock
- compare component specifications during selection
- seed batch MPN work with `--mpn-list`

## Example prompts
- “Search Mouser for a 100nF 0402 capacitor and show in-stock options.”
- “Check Mouser pricing, stock and lead time for GRM155R71C104KA88D.”
- “Process this MPN list with `--mpn-list` and collect the part parameters.”

name: mouser
description: Search Mouser Electronics for electronic components — secondary source for prototype orders. Find parts, check pricing/stock, download datasheets, analyze specifications. Use with KiCad for BOM creation and part selection. Also supports batch MPN-list seeding (`--mpn-list`) for bulk datasheet workflows without a KiCad project. Use this skill when the user specifically mentions Mouser, when DigiKey is out of stock or has worse pricing, when comparing prices across distributors, or when searching for parts that DigiKey doesn't carry. For package cross-reference tables and BOM workflow, see the `bom` skill.

## Related Skills

| Skill | Purpose |
|-------|---------|
| `kicad` | Schematic analysis — extracts MPNs for part lookup |
| `bom` | BOM management — orchestrates sourcing across distributors |
| `digikey` | Primary prototype source (prefer for datasheets — direct PDF links) |
| `spice` | Uses Mouser parametric data for behavioral SPICE models |

Mouser is the **secondary source for prototype orders** — use when DigiKey is out of stock or has worse pricing. For production orders, see `lcsc`/`jlcpcb`. For BOM management and export workflows, see `bom`. For datasheets, prefer DigiKey's API (direct PDF links) — Mouser blocks automated PDF downloads.

## API Credential Setup

Mouser uses **simple API key authentication** — no OAuth, no tokens, no callback URLs. The Search API key is a UUID passed as a query parameter.

### Getting Your API Key

1. Go to [mouser.com](https://www.mouser.com) → My Mouser → My Account
2. Under "APIs" section, click "Manage"
3. Register for **Search API** key — this is the one needed for part lookups and datasheet downloads
4. Search API keys may require approval (status shows "pending authorization" initially)

### Setting Credentials

Set the environment variable before running the scripts:
```bash
export MOUSER_SEARCH_API_KEY=your-search-api-key-uuid
```

If credentials are stored in a central secrets file (e.g., `~/.config/secrets.env`), load them first:
```bash
export $(grep -v '^#' ~/.config/secrets.env | grep -v '^$' | xargs)
```

## Mouser Search API Reference

All search endpoints use the Search API key as a query parameter: `?apiKey=<key>`. Content-Type is `application/json` for all POST requests.

### V1 Endpoints

#### Keyword Search
```
POST /api/v1/search/keyword?apiKey=<key>
```
```json
{
  "SearchByKeywordRequest": {
    "keyword": "100nF 0402 ceramic capacitor",
    "records": 50,
    "startingRecord": 0,
    "searchOptions": "InStock"
  }
}
```
- `searchOptions`: `"None"` | `"Rohs"` | `"InStock"` | `"RohsAndInStock"`
- `records`: max 50 per request
- `startingRecord`: offset for pagination

#### Part Number Search
```
POST /api/v1/search/partnumber?apiKey=<key>
```
```json
{
  "SearchByPartRequest": {
    "mouserPartNumber": "GRM155R71C104KA88D|RC0402FR-0710KL",
    "partSearchOptions": "Exact"
  }
}
```
- Up to **10 part numbers**, pipe-separated (`|`)
