# monitor-experiment

This skill checks running experiments, gathers logs and JSON results, and compares metrics. Use it when a job may still be running or needs a status check.

## What it does

The skill checks processes on an SSH server, Vast.ai, or Modal. It inspects active `screen` sessions, captures recent output, looks for JSON result files, and collects the data into a comparison with the correct baseline.

When `wandb: true` is set in `CLAUDE.md`, it can pull training curves, evaluation metrics, learning rate, run state, and GPU data through the Python API. Vast.ai runs include current instance cost, while Modal reports execution time and estimated cost. If `~/.claude/feishu.json` is configured, the skill can send an experiment-complete notification.

The workflow uses `ssh`, `screen`, `vastai`, `modal`, and project files. W&B requires access to its Python API, and metric collection depends on the `CLAUDE.md` setting, so check that configuration before monitoring a run.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill monitor-experiment -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/monitor-experiment/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/monitor-experiment/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill monitor-experiment -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/monitor-experiment/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill monitor-experiment -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/monitor-experiment/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep monitor-experiment
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/monitor-experiment/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill monitor-experiment -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --path skills/monitor-experiment
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/monitor-experiment/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill monitor-experiment -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep/tree/HEAD/skills/monitor-experiment/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check whether a remote experiment has finished
- capture recent output from `screen` sessions
- find and parse JSON result files
- compare experiment metrics with a baseline
- report Vast.ai or Modal run cost

## Example prompts
- Check the experiment on server `gpu-1` and show the latest logs.
- Monitor the `screen` session `train-model` and tell me whether the job is done.
- Collect the experiment results, compare them with the baseline, and check W&B metrics.

# Monitor Experiment Results

> ⏱ **External cadence is appropriate here.** This skill waits on an external
> fact (job completion / progress), so it is a natural `/loop` / `CronCreate`
> surface: the wake reads status and self-judges only **machine-checkable**
> completion (exit code, file exists, epoch logged) — never quality. This is

> [`shared-references/external-cadence.md`](../shared-references/external-cadence.md).
> If a scheduled wait here ends in a verdict step (e.g. then audit results),
> run that verdict **once** after the wait clears — not re-entered per tick.

## Workflow

### Step 1: Check What's Running

**SSH server:**
```bash
ssh <server> "screen -ls"
```

**Vast.ai instance** (read `ssh_host`, `ssh_port` from `vast-instances.json`):
```bash
ssh -p <PORT> root@<HOST> "screen -ls"
```

Also check vast.ai instance status:
```bash
vastai show instances
```

**Modal** (when `gpu: modal` in CLAUDE.md):
```bash
modal app list         # List running/recent apps
modal app logs <app>   # Stream logs from a running app
```
Modal apps auto-terminate when done — if it's not in the list, it already finished. Check results via `modal volume ls <volume>` or local output.

### Step 2: Collect Output from Each Screen
For each screen session, capture the last N lines:
```bash
ssh <server> "screen -S <name> -X hardcopy /tmp/screen_<name>.txt && tail -50 /tmp/screen_<name>.txt"
```

If hardcopy fails, check for log files or tee output.

### Step 3: Check for JSON Result Files
```bash
ssh <server> "ls -lt <results_dir>/*.json 2>/dev/null | head -20"
```

If JSON results exist, fetch and parse them:
```bash
ssh <server> "cat <results_dir>/<latest>.json"
```

### Step 3.5: Pull W&B Metrics (when `wandb: true` in CLAUDE.md)

**Skip this step entirely if `wandb` is not set or is `false` in CLAUDE.md.**

Pull training curves and metrics from Weights & Biases via Python API:

```bash
# List recent runs in the project
ssh <server> "python3 -c \"
import wandb
api = wandb.Api()
runs = api.runs('<entity>/<project>', per_page=10)
for r in runs:
    print(f'{r.id}  {r.state}  {r.name}  {r.summary.get(\"eval/loss\", \"N/A\")}')
\""
# Pull specific metrics from a run (last 50 steps)
ssh <server> "python3 -c \"
import wandb, json
api = wandb.Api()
run = api.run('<entity>/<project>/<run_id>')
````
