## What it does

\`mongodb-schema-design` collects MongoDB data-model patterns and anti-patterns for new designs, SQL migrations, schema reviews, and performance troubleshooting. It covers embedding versus references, relationship and tree models, schema validation, the 16MB document limit, index choices, archival, time series, document versioning, and schema evolution.

The workflow starts with access-pattern analysis. The skill asks whether the database is new or in production, where it runs, and whether the workload is read-heavy, write-heavy, or balanced. It then helps choose evidence such as application code, Query statistics, or Atlas Slow Query Logs. Query statistics and Atlas Slow Query Logs require an Atlas M10+ tier, so check the cluster tier before relying on those sources.

The skill can be installed for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, and OpenCode. A useful review needs the current collection structure and details about the queries or workload being investigated.

## Requirements
- Works with: MongoDB

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mongodb/agent-skills --skill mongodb-schema-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mongodb-schema-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mongodb-schema-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mongodb/agent-skills --skill mongodb-schema-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mongodb-schema-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mongodb/agent-skills --skill mongodb-schema-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mongodb-schema-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mongodb/agent-skills mongodb-schema-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mongodb-schema-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mongodb/agent-skills --skill mongodb-schema-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mongodb/agent-skills --path skills/mongodb-schema-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mongodb-schema-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mongodb/agent-skills --skill mongodb-schema-design -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- design a MongoDB data model from scratch
- choose between embedding and references
- review a schema for oversized documents and unbounded arrays
- migrate a normalized SQL model to MongoDB
- remove indexes that add overhead without query benefit

## Example prompts
- Design a MongoDB schema for these entities and compare embedding with references.
- Review this model for unbounded arrays, unnecessary indexes, and the 16MB document limit.
- Use the application queries to identify access patterns and recommend suitable MongoDB patterns.

# MongoDB Schema Design

Data modeling patterns and anti-patterns for MongoDB, maintained by MongoDB. Bad schema is the root cause of most MongoDB performance and cost issues—queries and indexes cannot fix a fundamentally wrong model.

## When to Apply

Reference these guidelines when:
- Designing a new MongoDB schema from scratch
- Migrating from SQL/relational databases to MongoDB
- Reviewing existing data models for performance issues
- Troubleshooting slow queries or growing document sizes
- Deciding between embedding and referencing
- Modeling relationships (one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-many)
- Implementing tree/hierarchical structures
- Seeing Atlas Schema Suggestions or Performance Advisor warnings
- Hitting the 16MB document limit
- Adding schema validation to existing collections

## Quick Reference

### 1. Schema Anti-Patterns - 3 rules

- [antipattern-unnecessary-collections](references/antipattern-unnecessary-collections.md) - Splitting homogeneous data into multiple collections is often an anti-pattern; consult this reference to validate whether this is the case.
- [antipattern-excessive-lookups](references/antipattern-excessive-lookups.md) - When encountering overly normalized collections that reference each other or frequent and possibly slow $lookup operations, consult this reference to validate whether this is problematic and how to fix it.
- [antipattern-unnecessary-indexes](references/antipattern-unnecessary-indexes.md) - Consult this reference when indexes overlap or are not used by queries, to identify and remove unnecessary indexes that add overhead without benefit.
