# mongodb-query-optimizer

This skill digs into slow MongoDB queries and suggests indexes. Handy when explain() shows a COLLSCAN and your database drags.

## What it does

The skill only fires when performance is on the table: why a query is slow, how to speed it up, which indexes to add, what slow queries are running on the cluster. Routine query authoring does not trigger it — that is baked into the description.

Inside is a step-by-step workflow built around the MongoDB MCP server. It starts by reading the collection's existing indexes with `collection-indexes`, then runs `explain` in `queryPlanner` mode to spot a COLLSCAN, and repeats with `executionStats` when needed, pulling a sample document through `find`. With Atlas API credentials configured, `atlas-get-performance-advisor` adds slow query logs and index recommendations. The preferred fix is an index, not a rewritten query.

Without MCP the picture narrows. You need either a working cluster connection string or Atlas API credentials; with neither, the skill falls back to suggesting indexes from query shape alone, and you create them yourself in Atlas or through migrations. Worth knowing before you install: skip the MCP server and half the checks never run.

## Requirements
- Works with: MongoDB

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mongodb/agent-skills --skill mongodb-query-optimizer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mongodb-query-optimizer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mongodb-query-optimizer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mongodb/agent-skills --skill mongodb-query-optimizer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mongodb-query-optimizer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mongodb/agent-skills --skill mongodb-query-optimizer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mongodb-query-optimizer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mongodb/agent-skills mongodb-query-optimizer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mongodb-query-optimizer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mongodb/agent-skills --skill mongodb-query-optimizer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mongodb/agent-skills --path skills/mongodb-query-optimizer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mongodb-query-optimizer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mongodb/agent-skills --skill mongodb-query-optimizer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mongodb/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/mongodb-query-optimizer/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find out why a MongoDB query is slow
- pick an index for a given filter and sort
- get a COLLSCAN out of the execution plan
- list the slow queries running on a cluster
- decide which indexes to drop to cut overhead

## Example prompts
- Why is this query slow: `db.orders.find({status: 'shipped', region: 'US'}).sort({date: -1})`
- What indexes exist on the orders collection in the store database?
- Show me the slow queries on my cluster and suggest what to optimize

  Help with MongoDB query optimization and indexing. Use only when the user asks for optimization or performance: "How do I optimize this query?", "How do I index this?", "Why is this query slow?", "Can you fix my slow queries?", "What are the slow queries on my cluster?", etc. Do not invoke for general MongoDB query writing unless user asks for performance or index help. Prefer indexing as optimization strategy. Use MongoDB MCP when available.

  Best with MongoDB MCP server. Uses collection-indexes and explain when the connection string works; uses Atlas Performance Advisor when Atlas API is configured. Without either, suggest indexes from query shape only. User creates indexes in Atlas or migrations unless tooling allows otherwise.

# MongoDB Query Optimizer

## When this skill is invoked

Invoke **only** when the user wants:

- Query/index **optimization** or **performance** help
- **Why** a query is slow or **how to speed it up**
- **Slow queries** on their cluster and/or **how to optimize them**

Do **not** invoke for routine query authoring unless the user has requested help with optimization, slow queries, or indexing.

## High Level Workflow

### General Performance Help

If the user wants to examine slow queries, or is looking for general performance suggestions (not regarding any particular query):

- Use MongoDB MCP server **atlas-get-performance-advisor** tool to fetch slow query logs and performance advisor output
- Make suggestions based on this information

If Atlas MCP Server for Atlas is not configured or you don’t have enough information to run **atlas-get-performance-advisor** against the correct cluster, tell the user that general performance analysis requires Atlas MCP Server configuration with API credentials, and suggest they configure it or ask about a specific query instead.

### Help with a Specific Query

If the user is asking about a particular query:

- Use **collection-indexes**, **explain**, and **find** MCP tools to get existing indexes on the collection, explain() output for the query, and a sample document from the collection
- Use **atlas-get-performance-advisor MCP** tool to fetch slow query logs and performance advisor output
