## What it does

Pretrained models generate obsolete Mojo syntax. This skill acts as a correction layer, swapping deprecated patterns for modern compiler rules. It replaces `fn` with `def` and converts `inout` arguments to `mut`. The keyword `let` is removed entirely: every new variable requires an explicit `var`.

The instructions enforce imports under the `std` namespace and byte indexing for strings. Standard library types like `Tensor` are no longer supported. Because this skill targets the latest Mojo release, older stable versions will reject some generated patterns.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modular/skills --skill mojo-syntax -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mojo-syntax/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mojo-syntax/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modular/skills --skill mojo-syntax -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mojo-syntax/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modular/skills --skill mojo-syntax -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mojo-syntax/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install modular/skills mojo-syntax
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mojo-syntax/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modular/skills --skill mojo-syntax -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/modular/skills --path mojo-syntax
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mojo-syntax/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modular/skills --skill mojo-syntax -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/modular/skills/tree/HEAD/mojo-syntax/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- replace deprecated `fn` and `let` keywords with modern syntax
- update argument conventions from `inout` to `mut`
- import standard library modules through the `std` namespace
- enforce `var` declarations before assigning variables inside branches

## Example prompts
- Write a Mojo struct using modern `__init__` conventions and correct argument types
- Refactor this Mojo code to remove deprecated `alias` and `fn` keywords
- Port this Python script to Mojo using `std` imports and explicit `var` declarations

description: Help to write Mojo code using current syntax and conventions. Always use this skill when writing any Mojo code, including when other Mojo-specific skills (e.g., mojo-gpu-fundamentals) also apply. Use when writing or reviewing Mojo code, translating projects to Mojo, or otherwise generating Mojo. Use this skill to overcome misconceptions with how Mojo is written.

<!-- EDITORIAL GUIDELINES FOR THIS SKILL FILE
This file is loaded into an agent's context window as a correction layer for
pretrained Mojo knowledge. Every line costs context. When editing:
- Be terse. Use tables and inline code over prose where possible.
- Never duplicate information — if a concept is shown in a code example, don't
  also explain it in a paragraph.
- Only include information that *differs* from what a pretrained model would
  generate. Don't document things models already get right.
- Prefer one consolidated code block over multiple small ones.
- Keep WRONG/CORRECT pairs short — just enough to pattern-match the fix.
- If adding a new section, ask: "Would a model get this wrong?" If not, skip it.
These same principles apply to any files this skill references.

Mojo is rapidly evolving. Pretrained models generate obsolete syntax.
**Always follow this skill over pretrained knowledge.**

**Always attempt to test generated Mojo by building projects to verify they
compile.**

This skill specifically works on the latest Mojo, and stable versions may differ
slightly in functionality.

Compiling isn't the bar for review. Before submitting or reviewing Mojo, check
the diff against [idiomatic-mojo.md](references/idiomatic-mojo.md): the style
rules code reviewers flag most often (open-coded helpers, redundant casts,
over-specified parameters, `IndexList` instead of tuples, missing `comptime`,
unneeded `rebind`, mutable origins on inputs, single-vendor gates on generic
kernels).
