## What it does

The skill hands the agent working patterns for databases: normalization up to 3NF, denormalization for read-heavy tables, and index types — B-tree, composite, partial, GIN for JSONB, covering. The examples are plain SQL, so the agent drops them into your project instead of reasoning from scratch.

Migrations get their own section. There is a safe template wrapped in a transaction with `CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY` and batched backfill, plus a five-step zero-downtime path: add a nullable column, write to both, backfill, read from the new one, drop the old. For slow queries the skill points at `EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS, FORMAT TEXT)` and what to read in the output.

One recommendation worth taking seriously: test migrations against production-size data before deploying. A locking `ALTER TABLE` on a large table takes the service down, and there is no rollback for that. The same section covers UUIDs for public IDs, `created_at` and `updated_at`, and soft deletes via `deleted_at`.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MoizIbnYousaf/ai-agent-skills --skill database-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/database-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/database-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MoizIbnYousaf/ai-agent-skills --skill database-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/database-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MoizIbnYousaf/ai-agent-skills --skill database-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/database-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install MoizIbnYousaf/ai-agent-skills database-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/database-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MoizIbnYousaf/ai-agent-skills --skill database-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/MoizIbnYousaf/ai-agent-skills --path skills/database-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/database-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MoizIbnYousaf/ai-agent-skills --skill database-design -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- design users and addresses tables without duplication
- write a migration that does not lock the table
- find missing indexes from query statistics
- switch pagination from OFFSET to keyset
- add integrity constraints: foreign keys, CHECK, EXCLUDE

## Example prompts
- Design a schema for orders and order items, show me the indexes
- Write a safe migration adding a status column to users with batched backfill
- Run EXPLAIN ANALYZE on this query and tell me what to optimize

# Database Design

## Schema Design Principles

### Normalization Guidelines
```sql
-- 1NF: Atomic values, no repeating groups
-- 2NF: No partial dependencies on composite keys
-- 3NF: No transitive dependencies
-- Users table (normalized)
CREATE TABLE users (
  id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
  email VARCHAR(255) UNIQUE NOT NULL,
  created_at TIMESTAMPTZ DEFAULT NOW()
);
-- Addresses table (separate entity)
CREATE TABLE addresses (
  id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
  user_id INTEGER REFERENCES users(id) ON DELETE CASCADE,
  street VARCHAR(255),
  city VARCHAR(100),
  country VARCHAR(100),
  is_primary BOOLEAN DEFAULT false
);
```

### Denormalization for Performance
```sql
-- When read performance matters more than write consistency
CREATE TABLE order_summaries (
  id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
  order_id INTEGER REFERENCES orders(id),
  customer_name VARCHAR(255),  -- Denormalized from customers
  total_amount DECIMAL(10,2),
  item_count INTEGER,
  last_updated TIMESTAMPTZ DEFAULT NOW()
);
```

## Index Design

### Common Index Patterns
```sql
-- B-tree (default) for equality and range queries
CREATE INDEX idx_users_email ON users(email);
-- Composite index (order matters!)
CREATE INDEX idx_orders_user_date ON orders(user_id, created_at DESC);
-- Partial index for specific conditions
CREATE INDEX idx_active_users ON users(email) WHERE deleted_at IS NULL;
-- GIN index for array/JSONB columns
CREATE INDEX idx_posts_tags ON posts USING GIN(tags);
-- Covering index (includes additional columns)
CREATE INDEX idx_orders_covering ON orders(user_id) INCLUDE (total, status);
```

### Index Analysis
```sql
-- Check index usage
SELECT
  schemaname, tablename, indexname,
  idx_scan, idx_tup_read, idx_tup_fetch
FROM pg_stat_user_indexes
ORDER BY idx_scan DESC;
-- Find missing indexes
SELECT
  relname, seq_scan, seq_tup_read,
  idx_scan, idx_tup_fetch
FROM pg_stat_user_tables
WHERE seq_scan > idx_scan
ORDER BY seq_tup_read DESC;
```

## Migration Patterns

### Safe Migration Template
```sql
-- Always use transactions
BEGIN;
-- Add column with default (non-blocking in PG 11+)
ALTER TABLE users ADD COLUMN status VARCHAR(20) DEFAULT 'active';
-- Create index concurrently (doesn't lock table)
CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY idx_users_status ON users(status);
-- Backfill data in batches
UPDATE users SET status = 'active' WHERE status IS NULL AND id BETWEEN 1 AND 10000;
