# testing

The skill covers where tests live for each MCP server, which runner picks them up, and how to clear the per-file coverage gate. Useful when a test is skipped or passes against a stale build.

## What it does

This skill documents the test harness for every server in the `modelcontextprotocol/servers` repo: the directory a test file belongs in, the runner that executes it, and the command for a single suite or a coverage report. The underlying rules sit in `AGENTS.md` — new behavior ships with tests, every TypeScript file clears a per-file coverage floor, and expected error output stays off the console.

Tests run in-process. The four TypeScript servers link a real `Client` to the server over `InMemoryTransport`; the three Python servers link a `ClientSession` to the real `serve()` over in-memory streams. Each server ships a harness under `__tests__/`, and you connect through it rather than wiring `createServer()` and `InMemoryTransport.createLinkedPair()` yourself, because the harness also handles per-session setup and teardown. For `everything` that includes a fresh session id, without which state leaks into the next test.

Picking a harness comes down to what the test must prove. Logic — a path check, a graph operation, a timezone conversion — goes through a direct function call. Anything a client can observe goes through a client, since calling a handler directly skips the SDK's input validation, output schema checks and error mapping, and that is where wire-level bugs tend to surface. A test file placed outside `__tests__/` never runs and vitest reports nothing about it, so a missing test is worth a look at the path.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install modelcontextprotocol/servers testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers --path .claude/skills/testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill testing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/testing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a protocol-level test for a TypeScript or Python server
- decide between calling a function directly and driving the server through a client
- find the command for one suite or a coverage report
- debug a test that is skipped or passes against a stale build
- clear the per-file coverage gate in CI

## Example prompts
- Write a protocol-level test for the echo tool in the everything server
- Why isn't my test in src/filesystem/tests/ running?
- Which command gives me coverage for a single file?

# Testing

The **rules** are in [`AGENTS.md`](../../../AGENTS.md) under **Always test new
or modified code**: new behavior comes with tests, every TypeScript file clears
the per-file coverage gate, test at the protocol level where you can, and keep
expected error output off the console. This skill explains the harness each
server has, how to write a test with it, which command runs what, and how to
clear the per-file coverage gate.

Driving a running server by hand, with the Inspector or an LLM client, is
`/client-smoke`. It is evidence for a PR, not a substitute for a test.

**Every server is tested in-process, and every file is gated.** The four
TypeScript servers link a real `Client` to the server over an in-memory
transport (#4854); the three Python servers link a `ClientSession` to the real
`serve()` over in-memory streams (#4855). Both languages hold each file to a
per-file coverage floor, in CI and in `npm run local:gate`.

## Where a test goes

| Server | Directory | File name | Runner |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `everything`, `filesystem`, `memory`, `sequentialthinking` | `src/<server>/__tests__/` | `<subject>.test.ts` | vitest, `globals: true` |
| `fetch`, `git`, `time` | `src/<server>/tests/` | `test_<subject>.py` | pytest, with `pytest-asyncio` (`asyncio_mode = "auto"`) |
| Root tooling | `scripts/`, beside the script | `<name>.test.mjs` | `node --test` |

Each vitest config includes only `**/__tests__/**/*.test.ts`, so a test file
anywhere else in a workspace is never run and reports nothing. Shared test
helpers go in `__tests__/` without the `.test` suffix, as each server's
connection harness does (`__tests__/harness.ts` in `everything`,
`__tests__/helpers.ts` in the other three).

## What each server's tests do

| Server | How its tests reach the code |
| --- | --- |
