# release

Walks one milestone release from the release issue through audit, version bumps and the merge PR to the GitHub Release a maintainer publishes.

## What it does

The skill is the procedure for a single milestone, start to finish. A release is cut from `main`, after the milestone's work has been merged there from `v2/main`. Nothing publishes from `v2/main`: `release.yml` refuses a Release whose commit is not on `main`.

The shape is fixed. One release issue, up to three preparation PRs on `v2/main` (the audit, the TypeScript version bumps, the Python version stamps), one merge PR into `main`, then the Release. Each step needs the one before it merged. Preparation PRs carry the audit's forced fixes and the version changes; the merge PR has no commits of its own and is verified by `npm run local:gate`, `npm run pack:verify` and a release ledger covering every milestone issue. Do not fold the two kinds together — a version bump made on the merge branch exists only downstream of `v2/main`, and nothing carries it back.

Publishing the GitHub Release and approving the `release` environment deployments stay with a maintainer, and so does merging any PR. The skill prepares, verifies and recommends. It starts by name only, since a release is never something to begin by inference. Before step 1 it runs the staleness check from `AGENTS.md`; on `STALE` you stop and ask for a session in a fresh worktree. The npm audit covers the root and all four TypeScript workspaces through one lockfile, while each Python server goes through `pip-audit` on its own lockfile. `npm audit fix` is never used.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill release -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/release/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/release/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill release -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/release/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill release -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/release/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install modelcontextprotocol/servers release
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/release/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill release -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers --path .claude/skills/release
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/release/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill release -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/release/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- run a milestone release from issue to GitHub Release without skipping a step
- confirm the milestone has no open issues left besides the release one
- audit npm and Python dependencies before any version bump
- open a merge PR from `v2/main` to `main` with no commits of its own
- write up a release ledger across all milestone issues

## Example prompts
- /release
- check that milestone vX.Y.Z is complete and file the release issue
- run the audit and prepare the preparation PRs on v2/main

# Cutting a milestone release

How versions and publishing work, and what to do when a publish fails, is
[`RELEASING.md`](../../../RELEASING.md). This skill is the procedure for one
milestone, start to finish. It is started by name only (`/release`), because a
release is never something to begin by inference.

A release is cut from **`main`**, after the milestone's work has been merged
there from `v2/main`. Nothing publishes from `v2/main`: `release.yml` refuses a
Release whose commit is not on `main`.

**What stays human.** Publishing the GitHub Release and approving the `release`
environment deployments are a maintainer's acts. So is merging any PR. Prepare,
verify and recommend; do not perform those.

## 0. Check this session's instructions first

A release is the longest-running session and the costliest to get wrong, and
it follows this skill and `AGENTS.md` exactly as they were when the session
started. Before step 1, run the staleness check in `AGENTS.md`
**Issue-driven work style** (all work in a worktree freshly cut from
`origin/v2/main`), whatever the `SessionStart` hook printed: the hook ran when
the session began, and this check runs now.

On `STALE`, or a `STALE` line from the `SessionStart` hook, **stop** and ask
for a session started in a fresh worktree. The v2.0.0 release ran its first
three steps on a `release` skill 447 commits out of date (#5167). Re-run the
check after each preparation PR merges, since `v2/main` moves under the
session, **from the session-start revision, not `HEAD`**: this flow moves
between worktrees (step 4e moves the verification worktree onto a newer
candidate), and a newer worktree's `HEAD` says nothing about the rules this
session loaded. The hook prints that revision and the re-check command.

## The shape

One **release issue**, up to three **preparation PRs** on `v2/main`, one
**merge PR** into `main`, then the **Release**. In that order: each step needs
the one before it merged.
