# mobile-principles

A rule set for mobile interfaces: tap target sizes, no-hover doctrine, thumb zones, safe areas and gestures. Loads when the agent detects a mobile platform.

## What it does

The skill hands your agent mobile UX context so it stops carrying desktop habits onto phones. Inside are tables of minimum tap target sizes for iOS, watchOS, Android and web, a no-hover doctrine with CSS, SwiftUI and Compose examples, Hoober's thumb zones, safe area handling, and canonical gestures such as swipe-back and pull-to-refresh. Reduced motion gets its own section with snippets for SwiftUI, UIKit and Compose.

The rules stay short; deeper material lives in `references/`. There is a version-sensitivity warning: API names and browser-support claims were checked against primary sources on 2026-09-08, and if that date is old the author advises re-verifying before acting on a version number. Worth heeding if your project tracks fresh SDKs.

The skill installs into Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode. In Claude the file lands at `~/.claude/skills/mobile-principles/SKILL.md`, in Cursor at `.cursor/skills/mobile-principles/SKILL.md`. Nothing else to configure.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill mobile-principles -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mobile-principles/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mobile-principles/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill mobile-principles -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mobile-principles/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill mobile-principles -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mobile-principles/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AThevon/genjutsu mobile-principles
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mobile-principles/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill mobile-principles -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AThevon/genjutsu --path skills/_jutsu/mobile-principles
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mobile-principles/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill mobile-principles -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/AThevon/genjutsu/tree/HEAD/skills/_jutsu/mobile-principles/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check that on-screen buttons meet the platform minimum
- remove UI that only appears on hover
- move the primary action into the bottom half of the screen
- handle the notch and home indicator on iPhone
- make animations respect reduced motion settings

## Example prompts
- Review this screen against mobile-principles: are the tap targets big enough?
- Rewrite the card hover styles so they are not the main trigger on touch devices
- Lay the buttons out by thumb zone and tell me what ended up on top for no reason

# Mobile Principles

> Touch-first UX context. Loaded when mobile is detected (web mobile, iOS, Android).
> Concise rules here. Deep-dive in `references/`.

## Touch Targets

| Platform | Recommended (design to this) | Hard floor | Spacing | Spec |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple iOS / iPadOS | 44x44 pt | 28x28 pt | ~12 pt padding around bezeled controls, ~24 pt around unbezeled ones | Apple HIG, Accessibility > Mobility |
| Apple watchOS | 44x44 pt | 28x28 pt | as above | Apple HIG |
| Android | 48x48 dp | 48x48 dp | 8 dp between targets | Material Design 3 |
| Web mobile | 44x44 CSS px | 24x24 CSS px | 24 px un-overlapped spacing satisfies the AA exception | WCAG 2.5.5 Target Size (Enhanced), **AAA** = 44x44; WCAG 2.5.8 Target Size (Minimum), **AA** = 24x24 |

**Rule of thumb:** any tap target smaller than the platform minimum is a usability bug, period.
The hit area can extend beyond the visible glyph (use padding, `hitSlop`, or a transparent inner spacer), but the *interactive* surface must reach the minimum. Spacing matters as much as size: two 44pt buttons touching edges are still mistappable.

## No-Hover Doctrine

`:hover` does not exist on touch. Treating it as a primary trigger means hidden affordances on every phone. Anything reachable only by hover is, on mobile, simply gone. Visible-by-default is the rule; hover styles are a desktop *enhancement*, never a load-bearing interaction.

**CSS - gate hover styles behind a media query:**
```css
.card { opacity: 1; transform: translateY(0); }
@media (hover: hover) and (pointer: fine) {
  .card { opacity: 0.85; }
  .card:hover { opacity: 1; transform: translateY(-2px); }
}
```

**SwiftUI - tap and long-press, no pseudo-hover:**
```swift
Image(systemName: "heart")
  .onTapGesture { toggleLike() }
  .contextMenu {
    Button("Share", systemImage: "square.and.arrow.up", action: share)
    Button("Report", systemImage: "flag", role: .destructive, action: report)
  }
```

**Compose - combinedClickable for tap + long-press:**
```kotlin
Box(
  modifier = Modifier
    .combinedClickable(
      onClick = { toggleLike() },
      onLongClick = { showContextMenu() },
    )
) {
````
