# mobile-first-design

A skill that sets the order of UI work: design the phone screen first, then scale to tablet and desktop. Useful when layouts break on small devices.

## What it does

The skill lays out a three-step approach. Start with the mobile range 320px - 480px: a single column, only essential content, touch targets big enough for a thumb. Then tablet at 768px - 1024px, where a second column, more spacing and hover states come in. Desktop from 1200px gets sidebars and richer layouts.

Reference guides live in the `references/` directory: responsive implementation, mobile performance, progressive enhancement. Alongside them is a practice list — touch targets of at least 44x44px, stacking content vertically, testing on real devices and slow networks, handling notches and safe areas.

The skill will not drop ready-made styles into your project. It gives the agent a decision frame, so on a codebase with a fixed desktop grid you apply the single-column advice by hand instead of expecting an automatic refactor.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill mobile-first-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mobile-first-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mobile-first-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill mobile-first-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mobile-first-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill mobile-first-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mobile-first-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts mobile-first-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mobile-first-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill mobile-first-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --path skills/mobile-first-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mobile-first-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill mobile-first-design -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts/tree/HEAD/skills/mobile-first-design/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- plan a layout from the phone screen up to desktop
- fit the key actions into one column on mobile
- pick breakpoints for tablet and desktop
- check touch targets and landscape orientation behaviour
- handle notches and safe areas on phones

## Example prompts
- Design the catalog screen with mobile-first-design: start at 320px, then tablet and desktop
- Review my markup against the mobile-first-design practices and tell me what breaks on a phone
- Rank the profile features for a mobile screen using mobile-first-design

## Overview

Mobile-first design prioritizes small screens as the starting point, ensuring core functionality works on all devices while leveraging larger screens for enhanced experience.

## When to Use

- Web application design
- Responsive website creation
- Feature prioritization
- Performance optimization
- Progressive enhancement
- Cross-device experience design

## Quick Start

Minimal working example:

```yaml
Mobile-First Approach:
Step 1: Design for Mobile (320px - 480px)
  - Constrained space forces priorities
  - Focus on essential content and actions
  - Single column layout
  - Touch-friendly interactive elements
Step 2: Enhance for Tablet (768px - 1024px)
  - Add secondary content
  - Multi-column layouts possible
  - Optimize spacing and readability
  - Take advantage of hover states
Step 3: Optimize for Desktop (1200px+)
  - Full-featured experience
  - Advanced layouts
  - Rich interactions
  - Multiple columns and sidebars
---
## Responsive Breakpoints:
Mobile: 320px - 480px
  - iPhone SE, older phones
// ... (see reference guides for full implementation)
```

## Reference Guides

Detailed implementations in the `references/` directory:

| Guide | Contents |
|---|---|
| [Responsive Design Implementation](references/responsive-design-implementation.md) | Responsive Design Implementation |
| [Mobile Performance](references/mobile-performance.md) | Mobile Performance |
| [Progressive Enhancement](references/progressive-enhancement.md) | Progressive Enhancement |

## Best Practices

### ✅ DO

- Design for smallest screen first
- Test on real mobile devices
- Use responsive images
- Optimize for mobile performance
- Make touch targets 44x44px minimum
- Stack content vertically on mobile
- Use hamburger menu on mobile
- Hide non-essential content on mobile
- Test with slow networks
- Progressive enhancement approach

### ❌ DON'T

- Assume all mobile users have fast networks
- Use desktop-only patterns on mobile
- Ignore touch interaction needs
- Make buttons too small
- Forget about landscape orientation
- Over-complicate mobile layout
- Ignore mobile performance
- Assume no keyboard (iPad users)
- Skip mobile user testing
- Forget about notches and safe areas
