# mlflow-onboarding

The skill figures out whether your project is GenAI or classic ML and walks you through the matching MLflow quickstart. Handy when you need tracking or tracing but don't know where to begin.

## What it does

It scans your codebase for signals. Imports of `openai`, `anthropic`, `langchain`, `langgraph`, `litellm` or the `mlflow.genai` and `mlflow.tracing` modules point to a GenAI app. Imports of `sklearn`, `torch`, `tensorflow`, `xgboost` and `.fit()` calls point to classic ML. If the code stays ambiguous, the skill checks the `mlflow.experimentKind` tag on your experiment and then asks you outright. It won't guess.

From there the path splits. GenAI projects get quickstarts on tracing, quality evaluation with LLM judges, and prompt versioning. Classic ML projects get experiment tracking with scikit-learn, PyTorch training with checkpoint logging, and hyperparameter search with Optuna. After the tutorial the skill can wire MLflow into your project, but it touches code only with your consent.

It works with what you already have: a live tracking URI and experiment, including config from Databricks tooling, get reused rather than replaced — profile, credentials and experiment stay as they are. One more thing worth knowing. Ask for a sample project and the skill won't assume you hold OpenAI or Anthropic keys; it builds traces from mock data with `@mlflow.trace` and `mlflow.start_span()`. No API key needed just to see tracing work.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mlflow/skills --skill mlflow-onboarding -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mlflow-onboarding/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mlflow-onboarding/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mlflow/skills --skill mlflow-onboarding -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mlflow-onboarding/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mlflow/skills --skill mlflow-onboarding -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mlflow-onboarding/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mlflow/skills mlflow-onboarding
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mlflow-onboarding/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mlflow/skills --skill mlflow-onboarding -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mlflow/skills --path mlflow-onboarding
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mlflow-onboarding/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mlflow/skills --skill mlflow-onboarding -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mlflow/skills/tree/HEAD/mlflow-onboarding/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- decide which MLflow path fits the project — GenAI or classic ML
- turn on automatic tracing for LLM calls
- compare hyperparameter search runs and pick the best model
- log parameters, metrics and checkpoints from PyTorch training
- build a tracing demo without external LLM provider keys

## Example prompts
- Help me get started with MLflow in this project
- Set up MLflow tracking for my scikit-learn model
- Add MLflow to my project and show me how to view traces

description: Onboards users to MLflow by determining their use case (GenAI agents/apps or traditional ML/deep learning) and guiding them through relevant quickstart tutorials and initial integration. If an experiment ID is available, it should be supplied as input to help determine the use case. Use when the user asks to get started with MLflow, set up tracking, add observability, or integrate MLflow into their project. Triggers on "get started with MLflow", "set up MLflow", "onboard to MLflow", "add MLflow to my project", "how do I use MLflow".

# MLflow Onboarding

Choose the onboarding path that matches the user’s project:

- **GenAI apps and agents** — tracing, evaluation, and prompt management for chatbots, RAG pipelines, and tool-calling agents.
- **Traditional ML / deep learning** — experiment tracking, model logging, and deployment for scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, XGBoost, and other training frameworks.

## Reuse existing configuration

Reuse a working tracking URI and experiment, including configuration supplied by
Databricks tooling. Resolve only missing configuration or a requested backend change;
do not replace the supplied profile, credentials or experiment.

## Step 1: Determine the Use Case

Check these signals in order. **Ask the user if the use case is still unclear.**

### Signal 1: Check the Codebase

Search the user's project for imports and usage patterns that indicate the use case:

**GenAI indicators:**
- Imports from LLM client libraries: `openai`, `anthropic`, `google.generativeai`, `google.genai`, `langchain`, `langchain_openai`, `langgraph`, `llamaindex`, `litellm`, `autogen`, `crewai`, `dspy`
- Imports from MLflow GenAI modules: `mlflow.genai`, `mlflow.tracing`, `mlflow.openai`, `mlflow.langchain`
- Usage of chat completions, embeddings, or agent frameworks
- Prompt templates or prompt engineering code

**Traditional ML indicators:**
- Imports from ML frameworks: `sklearn`, `torch`, `tensorflow`, `keras`, `xgboost`, `lightgbm`, `catboost`, `statsmodels`, `scipy`
- Imports from MLflow ML modules: `mlflow.sklearn`, `mlflow.pytorch`, `mlflow.tensorflow`
- Model training loops, `.fit()` calls, hyperparameter tuning code
- Dataset loading with tabular/image/time-series data

```bash
# Search for GenAI indicators
