## What it does

This skill provides training patterns for PyTorch models across domains like language modeling, vision, diffusion, and biomedical tasks. It includes guidance on picking architectures by dataset scale, calculating token budgets via Chinchilla scaling laws (about 20 tokens per parameter), and structuring training loops with gradient accumulation.

The recipes configure optimizer assignments across parameter groups, pairing Muon for 2D weight matrices with scaled AdamW for token embeddings. It also details learning rate schedules such as Warmup-Stable-Decay and cosine cooldown, alongside memory tricks like disabling the garbage collector on the first step to prevent stalls.

Running these patterns requires `torch>=2.0.0`. Mixed precision relies on `bfloat16` for Nvidia Ampere or newer GPUs, whereas older cards like the V100 need `fp16` paired with GradScaler to prevent gradient underflow.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill ml-training-recipes -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ml-training-recipes/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ml-training-recipes/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill ml-training-recipes -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ml-training-recipes/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill ml-training-recipes -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ml-training-recipes/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs ml-training-recipes
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ml-training-recipes/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill ml-training-recipes -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 10-optimization/ml-training-recipes
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ml-training-recipes/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill ml-training-recipes -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs/tree/HEAD/10-optimization/ml-training-recipes/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick an architecture based on data scale and modality;
- configure parameter-group splits between Muon and AdamW;
- calculate compute-optimal token budgets under Chinchilla scaling;
- eliminate garbage collection pauses and configure `torch.amp.autocast`.

## Example prompts
- Build a PyTorch training loop with bfloat16 autocast using ml-training-recipes
- Set up Muon for 2D weights and AdamW for token embeddings in my model
- Calculate compute-optimal token and parameter counts for a 7B model

## Architecture Selection

Pick the right model by **data type** and **data scale**:

| Data Type | < 10K samples | 10K-100K | > 100K |
|-----------|--------------|----------|--------|
| **Images** | Pretrained CNN + fine-tune | Fine-tune ViT or CNN | ViT from scratch |
| **Text (gen)** | Few-shot prompting | Fine-tune GPT/LLaMA (LoRA) | Pretrain from scratch |
| **Tabular** | XGBoost/LightGBM | Still XGBoost | Neural viable |
| **Audio** | Pretrained Whisper | Fine-tune AST | Train from scratch |
| **Molecules** | Pretrained GNN | Fine-tune molecular LM | Train GNN from scratch |
| **Proteins** | ESM-2 embeddings + head | Fine-tune ESM-2 | Train protein LM |
| **Medical img** | Pretrained CNN | nnU-Net (auto-config) | Swin-UNETR / MedSAM |

**Key principle**: architecture matters less than training recipe at equal compute. A well-tuned
ResNet beats a poorly-tuned ViT (ref: "ResNet Strikes Back", Wightman 2021).
