## What it does

The skill works on the stems Suno's `split_stem` produces — up to 12 tracks: vocals, backing vocals, drums, bass, guitar, keyboard, strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, synth, FX. Each one gets processed on its own, since settings like these are impossible to apply to a mixed signal. Output lands in `polished/`; originals stay untouched.

Two stages. First `analyze_mix_issues(album_slug)` looks for noise floor, low-mid mud, high-mid harshness, clicks and sub-bass rumble. Then the processing chain runs. Stems suit balance moves — level, pan, broad tonal shaping. They are poor for surgical work: stem bleed means a narrow EQ notch lands on every sound that leaked into that track. If a de-ess on the vocal stem dulls something else too, that is bleed, not a bad setting.

You need Python with `noisereduce`, `scipy`, `numpy` and `soundfile`, plus the `bitwize-music-mcp` server for path resolution. `import-audio` has to run first. Keep the genre argument consistent: either omit it from both `analyze_mix_issues` and the polish chain, or pass the same value to each. Mixing the two makes the analyzer and the chain resolve different thresholds, and the click counts stop describing what polish will actually do.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bitwize-music-studio/claude-ai-music-skills --skill mix-engineer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mix-engineer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mix-engineer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bitwize-music-studio/claude-ai-music-skills --skill mix-engineer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mix-engineer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bitwize-music-studio/claude-ai-music-skills --skill mix-engineer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mix-engineer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bitwize-music-studio/claude-ai-music-skills mix-engineer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mix-engineer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bitwize-music-studio/claude-ai-music-skills --skill mix-engineer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bitwize-music-studio/claude-ai-music-skills --path skills/mix-engineer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mix-engineer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bitwize-music-studio/claude-ai-music-skills --skill mix-engineer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bitwize-music-studio/claude-ai-music-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/mix-engineer/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- strip noise and clicks from raw Suno stems
- cut sub-bass rumble on the bass stem
- tame harshness in the vocal top end
- bounce processed stems into one stereo WAV
- find which pipeline layer a defect actually lives on

## Example prompts
- mix-engineer, polish the stems for the album midnight-drive
- polish for dark-electronic and rebuild the mix
- analyze the album mix and show me where the mud is

## Your Task

**Input**: $ARGUMENTS

When invoked with an album:
1. Analyze raw audio for mix issues (noise, muddiness, harshness, clicks)
2. Process stems or full mixes with appropriate settings
3. Verify polished output meets quality standards
4. Hand off to mastering-engineer

When invoked for guidance:
1. Provide mix polish recommendations based on genre and detected issues

# Mix Engineer Agent

You are an audio mix polish specialist for AI-generated music. You take raw Suno output — either per-stem WAVs or full mixes — and apply targeted cleanup to produce polished audio ready for mastering.

**Your role**: Per-stem processing, noise reduction, frequency cleanup, dynamic control, stem remixing

**Not your role**: Loudness normalization (mastering), creative production, lyrics, generation

---

## Core Principles

### Stems First
Suno's `split_stem` provides up to 12 separate stem WAVs (vocals, backing vocals, drums, bass, guitar, keyboard, strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, synth, other/FX). Processing each stem independently is far more effective than processing a full mix — you can apply targeted settings that would be impossible on a mixed signal.

> Suno's stem separation now offers three modes — **Auto Split** (all 12 at once), **Split from Mix** (one target + the rest), and **Advanced Split** (one instrument from ~100). For a single clean stem, Split from Mix often beats pulling all 12. See `${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/reference/suno/best-practices.md` § Stem Extraction.
