# mirrord-propagation-discovery

This skill inspects Kubernetes traffic for an identifier that mirrord can use to route one developer’s requests across a service chain. Use it to isolate your traffic on a shared staging cluster.

## What it does

The skill examines traffic at each service with `mirrord dump`. It looks for headers, trace IDs, JWT claims, cookies, and other values that persist across the request chain and distinguish one developer’s traffic. It sends a tagged probe from the edge or inspects ongoing traffic, scores the candidates, then prepares an `http_filter` and a report showing where identifiers disappear.

It leaves application code and cluster configuration unchanged. Discovery uses mirror-only dumps, but a probe `POST` creates real records and queue messages. Dumps can expose sensitive content, so run this only against staging or development clusters, never production. If `mirrord` is missing, the skill asks before installing it through a package manager.

## Requirements
- Works with: Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-propagation-discovery -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mirrord-propagation-discovery/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mirrord-propagation-discovery/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-propagation-discovery -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mirrord-propagation-discovery/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-propagation-discovery -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mirrord-propagation-discovery/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install metalbear-co/skills mirrord-propagation-discovery
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mirrord-propagation-discovery/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-propagation-discovery -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/metalbear-co/skills --path skills/mirrord-propagation-discovery
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mirrord-propagation-discovery/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-propagation-discovery -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- find an identifier for filtering mirrord requests
- check whether a trace ID reaches every service
- isolate your requests on a shared staging cluster
- locate where a request identifier disappears

## Example prompts
- Find an identifier in the staging cluster that mirrord can use to filter my requests.
- Check whether the trace ID reaches the final service in this request flow.
- Report where the request header disappears and prepare an `http_filter`.

description: >
  Scans a live Kubernetes environment with `mirrord dump` to find an identifier mirrord can
  filter traffic on: a header, a `baggage` or `tracestate` member, a tenant or user id, a trace id
  (W3C, B3, X-Ray, Google, Jaeger), a JWT claim, a cookie, a path segment, or a JSON body field
  that is present on every hop of a request chain, unique to one
  developer's traffic, and settable by that developer. Runs mirror-only dumps on each service,
  sends a tagged probe request at the edge or observes real traffic, scores the candidates, and
  produces the matching `http_filter` (regex, jq on headers, path, method, body, or combinations)
  plus a per-hop report of where each identifier is dropped. Installs the mirrord CLI through a
  package manager when it is missing. Use when the user asks what to filter on, whether the
  cluster already propagates a request id or trace context, how to isolate their own requests on
  a shared staging cluster, how to filter on a JWT or cookie with mirrord, or wants to inspect
  live traffic with mirrord dump. Changes no application code: propagation gaps go to the
  mirrord-header-propagation skill.

# mirrord Propagation Discovery Skill

> mirrord routes a request to a developer's local process when the request matches an HTTP filter. On a shared cluster that filter has to pick out **one developer's requests at every service the request passes through**, so the value it matches on must already travel with the request across all hops. This skill finds that value in a live environment instead of assuming one: it dumps the traffic arriving at each service with `mirrord dump`, checks which identifiers survive from the edge to the last hop, and turns the best one into a `mirrord.json` filter. The sister skill `mirrord-header-propagation` changes code to make `baggage` propagate; this one changes nothing and tells you what already works.

## Security Boundaries

> **IMPORTANT:** Follow these rules for all operations in this skill.

- **Mirror only, never steal, during discovery.** `mirrord dump` copies traffic; the target keeps answering every request. Don't run a `steal` session or an unfiltered session against a shared target while scanning. The only cluster-side effect is the short-lived mirrord agent pod (or ephemeral container) each dump creates.
- **Staging and development clusters only.** Dumps print real request content. Don't point them at production.
