# mirrord-prev-env

Walks you through mirrord preview environments: the changed service runs as its own pod in a shared cluster and takes traffic through a filter.

## What it does

Two paths are covered. Ad-hoc work means calling `mirrord preview start`, `status` and `stop` yourself. In CI the `metalbear-co/mirrord-preview` GitHub Action handles it: a preview comes up when a PR opens or gets a push, and goes away when the PR closes.

What you get is guidance and a security checklist, not generated code. A preview deploys your built image as a Deployment that copies the target's labels and annotations, but an added readinessGate keeps the pod from turning Ready, so the regular Service never sends it background traffic. Filtered requests arrive through a Headless Service. The environment key ties it together: it scopes HTTP and queue filtering, links several preview pods, and lets people share one preview. Leave it out and one is generated for you.

Reaching a preview takes the filter header, for instance `baggage: mirrord-session=<key>`. When the audience isn't technical, `mirrord-share-ingress` mints a plain HTTPS link and injects that header server-side. In CI, don't auto-start previews for fork PRs — untrusted contributor code would run against your cluster. Point previews at staging or dev, never production. A TTL (`ttl_mins` or `ttl_secs`) is required, or the preview lingers. On Istio and Linkerd the operator excludes the session's ports from sidecar interception by itself; Kuma gets no such handling, so traffic to the preview fails until a cluster admin sets the exclusion.

## Requirements
- Works with: Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-prev-env -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mirrord-prev-env/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mirrord-prev-env/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-prev-env -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mirrord-prev-env/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-prev-env -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mirrord-prev-env/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install metalbear-co/skills mirrord-prev-env
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mirrord-prev-env/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-prev-env -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/metalbear-co/skills --path skills/mirrord-prev-env
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mirrord-prev-env/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-prev-env -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/metalbear-co/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/mirrord-prev-env/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- validate a service change against live traffic without touching production requests
- spin up a preview for every pull request and tear it down on close
- hand a stakeholder a link to a preview without cluster access
- keep request interception scoped to a single environment key
- give CI cluster access with least-privilege RBAC

## Example prompts
- Start a mirrord preview environment for the checkout service with environment key env-42
- Show the status of the current `mirrord preview` session and stop it
- Wire the `metalbear-co/mirrord-preview` GitHub Action so a preview starts on PR and stops on close

# Mirrord Preview Environment Skill

## Purpose

Help users create and manage **mirrord preview environments**. A preview environment runs only the *modified* service(s) as isolated pods in a shared cluster, while their dependencies reach the rest of the main cluster through mirrord. Traffic is scoped by an **environment key** and a filter, so a change can be collaborated on, validated, and reviewed against **real traffic without affecting live services**.

This skill covers two modes:

1. **Ad-hoc (developer) mode** — a developer runs the `mirrord preview` CLI (`start` / `status` / `stop`) directly.
2. **CI mode** — the `metalbear-co/mirrord-preview` GitHub Action wires previews into a PR lifecycle (start on open/push, stop on close).

## When to Use This Skill

Trigger on questions like:
- "How do I run a mirrord preview environment?"
- "Set up per-PR preview environments with mirrord"
- "How do I use the mirrord-preview GitHub Action?"
- "`mirrord preview start` — what config and flags do I need?"
- "How do I route only my traffic to the preview pod?"
- "How do I check / stop a preview session?"

## Security (must follow)

Preview environments **deploy an image into a shared cluster and route live traffic to it**, so the security bar is higher than for config generation. Always:
