# mirrord-header-propagation

A skill that makes your code carry the baggage header with the mirrord session key through HTTP, gRPC and message queues, so a filter matches the whole request chain.

## What it does

mirrord decides where to send traffic by looking at a header. The agreed form is W3C `baggage` holding a `mirrord-session=<key>` entry, which HTTP filters and queue splitting both read. Past the first hop that stops working unless each service puts `baggage` on its outgoing calls and published messages, and each consumer pulls it back out of every message it handles.

The skill walks the repo and builds a flow inventory: HTTP and gRPC ingress, broker consumers, outbound clients, scheduled work, storage hand-offs. It looks for the places where context quietly disappears too, such as thread pools, tasks started without `ctx` and buffers that publish later. If the project already runs OpenTelemetry, Datadog or another tracer, the skill prefers switching propagation on there instead of adding its own layer. Otherwise it writes a small one. Inbound and outbound paths are handled for Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS/SNS, GCP Pub/Sub, Azure Service Bus, NATS, Redis Pub/Sub, BullMQ and Temporal. The run ends with a report listing every flow it found and the ones that still drop the header.

Edits stay in application code and dependency manifests, on a branch. Nothing touches infrastructure: bucket notifications, topics and subscriptions are described for you to apply yourself. One security rule matters here. The session key routes traffic to a developer session, so it must never leave your system — `baggage` goes only to internal destinations and is stripped from clients calling outside hosts.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure, Datadog

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-header-propagation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mirrord-header-propagation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mirrord-header-propagation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-header-propagation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mirrord-header-propagation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-header-propagation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mirrord-header-propagation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install metalbear-co/skills mirrord-header-propagation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mirrord-header-propagation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-header-propagation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/metalbear-co/skills --path skills/mirrord-header-propagation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mirrord-header-propagation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metalbear-co/skills --skill mirrord-header-propagation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- carry the `baggage` session key through an HTTP and gRPC call chain
- restore message context inside every queue consumer
- spot background tasks and thread pools that lose the context
- turn on propagation through existing OpenTelemetry or Datadog setup
- get a report of flows that still discard the header

## Example prompts
- Set up `baggage` propagation so the mirrord filter also matches downstream services
- Find which of our Kafka consumers drop `baggage` and fix them
- Switch on baggage propagation through OpenTelemetry and show me what is still uncovered

  Makes a codebase propagate W3C baggage (the `baggage` header carrying `mirrord-session=<key>`)
  end to end, so mirrord HTTP filters, preview environments, and queue splitting can route a
  whole request chain to one developer's session. Detects existing OpenTelemetry, Datadog, or
  other tracing that can already propagate baggage and enables it; otherwise adds a small
  propagation layer. Covers inbound/outbound HTTP and gRPC, publishing to and consuming from
  Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS/SNS, GCP Pub/Sub, Azure Service Bus, NATS, Redis Pub/Sub, BullMQ and
  Temporal, per-message context restore in consumers, and storage hand-offs such as a GCS signed
  URL upload that triggers Pub/Sub or an S3 presigned upload that triggers SQS. Ends with a
  report of every flow found and which ones still drop the header. Use when the user asks to
  propagate headers, baggage, tracestate, the mirrord session key, or trace context across
  services or queues, or when a mirrord filter matches the first service but not downstream
  services or queue consumers.

# mirrord Header Propagation Skill

> mirrord routes traffic to a developer's session by matching a header. The convention is W3C `baggage` with a `mirrord-session=<key>` entry: HTTP filters use `"header_filter": "^baggage: .*mirrord-session={{ key }}.*$"`, and queue splitting filters on a message header or attribute named `baggage`. That only works past the first hop if **every service forwards `baggage` on every outgoing call and every message it publishes**, and every consumer restores it from each message it handles. This skill makes a codebase do that, preferring the observability stack it already has.

## Security Boundaries

> **IMPORTANT:** Follow these rules for all operations in this skill.
