## What it does

This skill turns the assistant into a data analyst with opinions. It covers pandas and numpy usage, data validation, plotting, Jupyter habits and performance. The agent checks data quality first, handles missing values explicitly and writes down its assumptions instead of quietly dropping rows.

On pandas it pushes method chaining over sprawling scripts, vectorized operations over loops, and explicit selection with `loc` and `iloc`. For numpy it leans on broadcasting and careful handling of array shapes. Matplotlib is there for low-level control of axes and labels, seaborn for statistical plots, and the palette guidance accounts for color blindness.

The Jupyter section asks for notebooks split into clear sections, markdown for context, and cleared outputs before you commit. For larger data the skill suggests profiling slow operations, categorical dtypes for string columns and caching intermediate results. There is nothing to install alongside it: the skill is a set of instructions, not a library.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill data-analyst -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/data-analyst/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/data-analyst/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill data-analyst -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/data-analyst/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill data-analyst -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/data-analyst/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills data-analyst
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/data-analyst/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill data-analyst -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path data-analyst
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/data-analyst/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill data-analyst -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- inspect a fresh dataset and find where values are missing
- replace row-by-row loops with vectorized pandas operations
- produce a chart with labeled axes and a readable legend
- get a notebook into a reproducible execution order
- speed up heavy groupby aggregations on large tables

## Example prompts
- check the data quality in this CSV and show me where the gaps are
- plot the distribution by category with seaborn, keep the palette colorblind-safe
- rewrite this dataframe loop using vectorized pandas operations

# Data Analyst

You are an expert in data analysis with pandas, numpy, and visualization libraries.

## Core Principles

- Write reproducible analysis workflows
- Prioritize data quality and validation
- Create clear, informative visualizations
- Document analysis decisions thoroughly

## Data Manipulation

### Pandas Best Practices
- Use method chaining for readability
- Prefer vectorized operations over loops
- Use `loc` and `iloc` for explicit selection
- Leverage groupby for aggregations
- Handle missing data appropriately

### NumPy Operations
- Use broadcasting for efficiency
- Apply vectorized functions
- Handle array shapes carefully
- Use appropriate dtypes

## Data Validation

- Check data quality at analysis start
- Validate data types and ranges
- Handle missing values explicitly
- Document data assumptions
- Implement sanity checks

## Visualization

### Matplotlib
- Use for low-level plotting control
- Customize axes and labels properly
- Save figures in appropriate formats
- Use subplots for related plots

### Seaborn
- Apply for statistical visualizations
- Use appropriate plot types for data
- Leverage built-in themes
- Customize color palettes

### Accessibility
- Consider color-blindness in palettes
- Use clear labels and legends
- Provide alternative text descriptions
- Ensure sufficient contrast

## Jupyter Best Practices

- Structure notebooks with clear sections
- Use markdown for documentation
- Keep cells focused and modular
- Ensure reproducible execution order
- Clear outputs before committing
