## What it does

This skill keeps a record of business driving and turns it into a deduction figure. You supply the total business miles, since the skill cannot read an odometer, and it multiplies that number by the IRS rate. The rate written into the skill is $0.70 per mile for 2025, with a note to confirm the current figure at irs.gov — the IRS revises it every year, and sometimes partway through one.

Two Wilson tools do the checking. `transaction_search` pulls up charges at gas stations, tolls and parking lots, while `export_transactions` saves the vehicle expenses for your records. Those charges are matched against the dates in your mileage log, which shows whether the claimed miles line up with money actually spent.

Pick one method per vehicle per year: the standard rate or actual expenses. Starting with the standard rate in a vehicle's first year of service leaves the door open to switching to actual expenses later. The other direction is closed. Parking and tolls stay deductible on top of the standard rate. Driving from home to a regular office never counts; home office to a client site does. Nothing here is tax advice, so filing decisions belong with a CPA.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill mileage-tracker -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mileage-tracker/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mileage-tracker/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill mileage-tracker -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mileage-tracker/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill mileage-tracker -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mileage-tracker/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install openaccountant/skills mileage-tracker
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mileage-tracker/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

## When to use it
- work out the deduction for a year of business driving
- match claimed miles against fuel and toll charges
- choose between the standard rate and actual vehicle expenses
- build a trip log with dates, route and business purpose
- export vehicle expenses for recordkeeping alongside the log

## Example prompts
- Add up my deduction: 4,200 business miles this year at $0.70 per mile
- Use `transaction_search` to find every gas station and toll charge in March and check them against my mileage log
- Export my vehicle expenses with `export_transactions` and tell me what goes on Schedule C, Line 9

# Business Mileage Tracker

## Overview

Tracks business miles driven and calculates the IRS mileage deduction. Cross-references fuel, toll, and parking transactions to validate driving activity. You must choose between the standard mileage rate and actual vehicle expenses for each vehicle -- you cannot use both methods for the same vehicle in the same year.

## Wilson Tools Used

- `transaction_search` — Find gas station, toll, and parking transactions to cross-reference against mileage logs
- `export_transactions` — Export vehicle-related expenses for recordkeeping

## Workflow

1. Ask for the total business miles driven (Wilson cannot track odometer readings directly).
2. Multiply business miles by the current IRS standard mileage rate: **$0.70/mile for 2025** (verify the current year rate at irs.gov).
3. Use `transaction_search` to find transactions matching gas stations, toll charges, and parking fees.
4. Cross-reference driving-related transactions against the mileage log dates to validate consistency.
5. Calculate the deduction: `business_miles x rate_per_mile`.
6. Report the deduction amount for Schedule C, Line 9 (Car and truck expenses).

### Standard Mileage Rate vs. Actual Expenses

| Method | What You Deduct | When to Use |
|--------|----------------|-------------|
| Standard mileage | Miles x IRS rate | Simpler; usually better for fuel-efficient or low-cost vehicles |
| Actual expenses | Gas, insurance, repairs, depreciation, registration, lease payments x business-use % | Better for expensive vehicles with high operating costs |

**You must choose one method per vehicle per year.** If you use standard mileage in the first year a vehicle is placed in service, you can switch to actual expenses later. If you start with actual expenses, you cannot switch to standard mileage for that vehicle.

### Required Mileage Log Fields

The IRS requires contemporaneous records. Each entry should include:

- Date of the trip
- Starting location and destination
- Business purpose of the trip
- Miles driven
- Odometer reading (start and end, at minimum annually)

## Without Wilson

1. Create a spreadsheet with columns: Date, From, To, Purpose, Miles.
2. Log every business trip as it happens (the IRS does not accept reconstructed logs).
3. At year end, sum the Miles column.
