# migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai

A skill that moves TypeScript Mastra apps to Python with Pydantic AI. Use it when source code imports @mastra/* or relies on Mastra agents, tools, workflows, memory, or streaming.

## What it does

The skill's core rule: preserve observable behavior, not TypeScript or Mastra's object model. It starts with tracing a single real request from the public entrypoint through tools, processors, memory, and side effects. Repository instructions, dependencies, tests, and installed versions of Mastra, Pydantic AI, and Harness get recorded first.

For the agent loop, `pydantic_ai.Agent` handles typed dependencies, tools, outputs, hooks, streaming, and MCP clients. `pydantic_graph` appears only when explicit typed nodes and branches still help; plain async Python covers simple control flow. Harness is added only for observed reusable policy like memory notebooks or model-directed subagents.

High-risk gates are explicit. Mastra `RequestContext` is trusted run context, so authenticated identity maps to typed dependencies and only model-chosen values become tool parameters. A Mastra workflow stays deterministic application code: `.branch()`, `.parallel()`, and suspend conditions do not move into an agent prompt. Approval pauses a validated action but does not authenticate the approver, so identity and authorization remain in the application.

Record the installed Mastra, Pydantic AI, and Harness versions before tracing — the mapping depends on them.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pydantic/skills --skill migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pydantic/skills --skill migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pydantic/skills --skill migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pydantic/skills migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pydantic/skills --skill migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pydantic/skills --path skills/migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pydantic/skills --skill migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/pydantic/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/migrating-mastra-to-pydantic-ai/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- migrate Mastra agents to `pydantic_ai.Agent` without losing caller-visible behavior
- rewrite Mastra workflows as plain Python or `pydantic_graph`
- split `RequestContext` into typed dependencies and model-chosen tool parameters
- keep the existing HTTP, job, or UI boundary with its current field names
- decide when Harness is actually needed and when core Pydantic AI is enough

## Example prompts
- migrate this Mastra agent to Pydantic AI, keeping caller behavior intact
- trace one request from the entrypoint and list the contracts to preserve
- this Mastra workflow must stay deterministic code — rewrite it without moving logic into the prompt

# Migrate Mastra to Pydantic AI

Preserve observable behavior, not TypeScript or Mastra's object model. Migrate the smallest complete caller path and keep application infrastructure in place.

## Trace the source before choosing a target

1. Read repository instructions, dependencies, tests, and the runtime entrypoint. Record the installed Mastra, Pydantic AI, and Harness versions.
2. Trace one real request from its public entrypoint, whether an `Agent.generate()` / `Agent.stream()` call or a workflow run, through the tools, processors, memory, events, results, state, and side effects that callers use. Establish a focused baseline or characterization test.
3. Separate these source contracts when present:
   - request context, model-chosen tool input, workflow input/output, and shared workflow state;
   - conversation messages, semantic recall, working or observational memory, workflow snapshots, and model-owned plans;
   - final text or objects, token deltas, lifecycle events, tripwires, and terminal workflow status;
   - tool approval, authenticated authorization, and process or sandbox isolation;
   - deterministic workflows, agent-selected delegation, queues, schedules, and durable execution.
4. Record each observed contract, its owner, semantic difference, and executable proof. An unused Mastra feature is not migration scope.

Read [Research and concept mapping](references/RESEARCH-AND-MAPPING.md) for the detected source features. Read [Verification and cutover](references/VERIFICATION-AND-CUTOVER.md) before implementation.
