## What it does

The skill migrates from the running application, not from docs. It starts by reading repository instructions, dependency files, tests and real entrypoints, then identifies the installed LangChain, LangGraph, Deep Agents, Pydantic AI and Harness versions. From there it traces one representative request through prompts, retrieval, model and tool calls, state, persistence, interrupts, emitted events and tracing callbacks. That trace is what defines the smallest slice worth moving.

Next comes classification: chain or LCEL pipeline, LangChain agent, direct LangGraph workflow, Deep Agents harness, or product runtime. Each class has its own target — plain Python, one reusable `pydantic_ai.Agent`, `pydantic_graph`, or Harness capabilities. Queues, database backends, sandboxes, auth and transport adapters stay where they are unless you put them in scope.

Bundled references cover concept mapping, a separate Deep Agents map, semantic gaps, workaround recipes and Logfire verification. You are not meant to read them all up front; the semantic-gaps file is for state, middleware, retries, approvals, concurrency and streaming, where similar-looking APIs can behave differently. The skill also insists you not call a migration one-to-one just because the happy path matches. For checkpointed graphs, interrupts, concurrent fan-out or external side effects it asks for a migration ledger that separates dependencies, messages, workflow state, checkpoint state and long-term memory.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pydantic/skills --skill migrating-langchain-to-pydantic-ai -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/migrating-langchain-to-pydantic-ai/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/migrating-langchain-to-pydantic-ai/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pydantic/skills --skill migrating-langchain-to-pydantic-ai -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/migrating-langchain-to-pydantic-ai/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pydantic/skills --skill migrating-langchain-to-pydantic-ai -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/migrating-langchain-to-pydantic-ai/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pydantic/skills migrating-langchain-to-pydantic-ai
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/migrating-langchain-to-pydantic-ai/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pydantic/skills --skill migrating-langchain-to-pydantic-ai -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pydantic/skills --path skills/migrating-langchain-to-pydantic-ai
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/migrating-langchain-to-pydantic-ai/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pydantic/skills --skill migrating-langchain-to-pydantic-ai -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/pydantic/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/migrating-langchain-to-pydantic-ai/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- port a LangChain agent to a single `pydantic_ai.Agent` with typed dependencies
- decide whether a LangGraph workflow needs `pydantic_graph` or plain async Python
- replace `create_deep_agent` with Harness capabilities and application services
- keep persistence, interrupt and streaming contracts intact through the rewrite
- separate behavior from framework shape and leave infrastructure out of the migration

## Example prompts
- Read this repository and plan a migration from LangChain to Pydantic AI. Trace one representative request from prompt to result first.
- The project uses `create_deep_agent` with a sandbox and subagents. Map each bundled feature to Pydantic AI Harness or a core primitive.
- Before we cut over, probe the semantic gaps around state, retries and streaming and list the residual risks.

# Migrate LangChain, LangGraph, and Deep Agents to Pydantic AI

Preserve behavior, not framework shape. Migrate the smallest behaviorally complete slice and leave application infrastructure outside that slice unchanged. LangChain, LangGraph, and Deep Agents are one source ecosystem; Pydantic AI, `pydantic_graph`, and Pydantic AI Harness are the matching target ecosystem, and this skill maps across all of it.

## Work from the running application

1. Read repository instructions, dependency files, tests, and the actual runtime entrypoints. Identify the installed LangChain, LangGraph, Deep Agents, Pydantic AI, and Harness versions.
2. Trace one representative request through prompts, retrieval, model and tool calls, state, persistence, interrupts, emitted events, tracing/metrics callbacks, and the public result. Inspect every caller and sibling endpoint that consumes the migrated component; a narrow implementation slice can still have several public contracts. Include keyword parameter names and the sync, async, callback, and streaming forms callers actually use. Record only contracts those paths actually use.
