# migrating-airflow-2-to-3

Walks Airflow 2.x DAG code through the move to 3.x: imports, operators, hooks, metadata access. Useful when the upgrade is due and hunting breaking changes by hand is tedious.

## What it does

The skill reads your DAGs, custom operators and `@task` functions, then points out what has to change for Airflow 3. Ruff does the heavy lifting: `ruff check --preview --select AIR --fix --unsafe-fixes .` fixes what it can detect, and a manual checklist in `reference/migration-checklist.md` covers the rest.

Four reference files ship with it: `airflow.cfg` section moves, code examples for imports, scheduling, XCom and Assets, removed model methods, and search patterns for issues Ruff misses. The architecture section matters most. Workers no longer talk to the metadata DB directly — task code runs through the Task Execution API on the API server, so anything using `provide_session` or `session.query(DagModel)` fails with a RuntimeError about direct database access. The suggested replacements are `apache-airflow-client` or plain REST calls.

The author recommends going to Airflow 2.11 first, then to at least 3.0.11, ideally straight to 3.1 — other paths make rollbacks impossible. Watch the behaviour changes too: `.airflowignore` switched from regexp to glob, OAuth callback URLs gained an `/auth/` prefix, and a bare `import common` from `dags/common/` no longer resolves on Astro, so you need `import dags.common`. A PostToolUse hook echoes a reminder to run the Ruff check after edits.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill migrating-airflow-2-to-3 -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/migrating-airflow-2-to-3/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/migrating-airflow-2-to-3/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill migrating-airflow-2-to-3 -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/migrating-airflow-2-to-3/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill migrating-airflow-2-to-3 -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/migrating-airflow-2-to-3/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install astronomer/agents migrating-airflow-2-to-3
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/migrating-airflow-2-to-3/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill migrating-airflow-2-to-3 -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/astronomer/agents --path skills/migrating-airflow-2-to-3
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/migrating-airflow-2-to-3/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill migrating-airflow-2-to-3 -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/astronomer/agents/tree/HEAD/skills/migrating-airflow-2-to-3/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find DAG code that breaks on the Airflow 3 upgrade
- replace direct ORM metadata access with the Airflow Python client
- rewrite operator and hook imports for Airflow 3 providers
- scan for deprecated code before it gets removed
- debug a trigger that blocks the event loop on a sync hook call

## Example prompts
- Help me migrate this DAG from Airflow 2 to Airflow 3
- Scan the project for Airflow 3 breaking changes and plan the edits per file
- This code hits the metadata DB through provide_session — rewrite it for Airflow 3

# Airflow 2 to 3 Migration

This skill helps migrate **Airflow 2.x DAG code** to **Airflow 3.x**, focusing on code changes (imports, operators, hooks, context, API usage).

**Important**: Before migrating to Airflow 3, strongly recommend upgrading to Airflow 2.11 first, then to at least Airflow 3.0.11 (ideally directly to 3.1). Other upgrade paths would make rollbacks impossible. See: https://www.astronomer.io/docs/astro/airflow3/upgrade-af3#upgrade-your-airflow-2-deployment-to-airflow-3. Additionally, early 3.0 versions have many bugs - 3.1 provides a much better experience.

## Migration at a Glance

1. Run Ruff's Airflow migration rules to auto-fix detectable issues (AIR30/AIR301/AIR302/AIR31/AIR311/AIR312).
   - `ruff check --preview --select AIR --fix --unsafe-fixes .`
2. Scan for remaining issues using the manual search checklist in [reference/migration-checklist.md](reference/migration-checklist.md).
   - Focus on: direct metadata DB access, legacy imports, scheduling/context keys, XCom pickling, datasets-to-assets, REST API/auth, plugins, and file paths.
   - Hard behavior/config gotchas to explicitly review:
     - Cron scheduling semantics: consider `AIRFLOW__SCHEDULER__CREATE_CRON_DATA_INTERVAL=True` if you need Airflow 2-style cron data intervals.
     - `.airflowignore` syntax changed from regexp to glob; set `AIRFLOW__CORE__DAG_IGNORE_FILE_SYNTAX=regexp` if you must keep regexp behavior.
     - OAuth callback URLs add an `/auth/` prefix (e.g. `/auth/oauth-authorized/google`).
