## What it does

This skill handles the migration of .NET test projects from xUnit v2 packages to xunit.v3. It inspects `.csproj`, `.sln`, `.slnx`, or `Directory.Packages.props` files in the current workspace, swaps the package references, and configures `OutputType=Exe`.

It preserves existing test execution pipelines. If a project previously used `YTest.MTP.XUnit2`, the skill removes the shim and enables `UseMicrosoftTestingPlatformRunner`. For VSTest setups, it retains `xunit.runner.visualstudio`. It also updates source code breaking changes, adding the `IXunitTest` parameter to overrides on `BeforeAfterTestAttribute`, adjusting `async void` tests, and resolving compatible releases for `Xunit.Combinatorial` and `Xunit.StaFact`.

A test project targeting anything below .NET 8 or .NET Framework 4.7.2 will block migration immediately: the skill halts execution and asks you to raise the target framework first. The workflow finishes only when tests build cleanly, get discovered by the runner, and pass.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3 -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3 -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3 -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3 -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-test-migration/skills/migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3 -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dotnet/skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/dotnet-test-migration/skills/migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- migrate .NET test projects from xUnit.net v2 to xunit.v3
- switch test projects to OutputType=Exe and configure test runners
- update BeforeAfterTestAttribute implementations with the IXunitTest parameter
- synchronize companion dependencies like Xunit.Combinatorial and Xunit.StaFact
- convert test references inside Directory.Packages.props for Central Package Management

## Example prompts
- Migrate this solution from xUnit v2 to xunit.v3
- Update our test projects to xunit.v3 and fix any build errors
- Run migrate-xunit-to-xunit-v3 on this repository

# xunit.v3 Migration

Migrate .NET test projects from xUnit.net v2 to xUnit.net v3. The outcome is a solution where all test projects reference `xunit.v3.*` packages, compiles cleanly, and all tests pass with the same results as before migration.

## When to Use

- Upgrading test projects from `xunit` (v2) packages to `xunit.v3`
- Resolving compilation errors after updating xunit package references to v3

## When Not to Use

- Migrating between test frameworks (e.g., MSTest or NUnit to xUnit.net) — different effort entirely
- Migrating from VSTest to Microsoft.Testing.Platform — use `migrate-vstest-to-mtp`
- The projects already reference `xunit.v3` — migration is done

## Inputs

| Input | Required | Description |
|-------|----------|-------------|
| Test project or solution | No | Discover `.csproj`, `.sln`, `.slnx`, central props, and source in the current working directory; ask only if none are found or the target is ambiguous |

## Workspace and Completion Contract

- Skill activation is not completion. For migrate/fix/update requests, inspect
  the staged files, edit them, and run tests in the same task.
- The skill base directory contains only guidance. Search the current working
  directory and open paths exactly as returned.
- If a tool rejects a searched path, classify the rejection before retrying.
  Only a positively confirmed reader/path-normalization limitation with
  authorized access permits retrying through another permitted reader/editor.
- On a permission, policy, or content-exclusion denial, stop that path and
  report the blocker. Never bypass the denial through other tools, shell
  commands, aliases, or agents, or infer or reconstruct the restricted content.
- If the rejection reason is unclear, treat the path as unavailable, not
