## What it does

This skill guides the conversion of interactive UI components and backend handlers from OpenAI Apps SDK to `@modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps`. Rather than reading the synchronous `window.openai` object, client apps instantiate the `App` class and attach listeners like `ontoolinput` and `ontoolresult`. On the backend, tools and assets switch to `registerAppTool` and `registerAppResource` helpers.

Because MCP renders UIs inside sandboxed iframes, CSP declarations become mandatory. Missing domains in `resourceDomains` or `connectDomains` fail silently, so the migration workflow audits every network origin across bundled assets and configures CORS headers including `mcp-session-id`.

Certain OpenAI features do not map directly. Built-in helpers like `window.openai.uploadFile`, `requestModal`, and `widgetState` lack MCP counterparts, requiring developers to store state in `localStorage` or on the server.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill migrate-oai-app -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/migrate-oai-app/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/migrate-oai-app/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill migrate-oai-app -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/migrate-oai-app/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill migrate-oai-app -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/migrate-oai-app/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps migrate-oai-app
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/migrate-oai-app/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill migrate-oai-app -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --path plugins/mcp-apps/skills/migrate-oai-app
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/migrate-oai-app/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill migrate-oai-app -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps/tree/HEAD/plugins/mcp-apps/skills/migrate-oai-app/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- convert legacy `window.openai` calls to the MCP `App` class
- replace server tool handlers with `registerAppTool` and `registerAppResource`
- audit bundle origins to declare required iframe CSP domains
- configure CORS headers for HTTP server endpoints

## Example prompts
- Help me migrate this widget from OpenAI Apps SDK to MCP Apps SDK
- Convert our frontend from `window.openai` to the MCP `App` event listeners
- Audit our build bundle for CSP domains needed by the MCP app

# Migrate OpenAI App to MCP

Migrate existing OpenAI Apps SDK applications to the MCP Apps SDK (`@modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps`). The MCP Apps SDK provides a standardized, open protocol for interactive UIs in conversational clients.

## Best Practices

- Use your package manager to add dependencies (e.g., `npm install`, `pnpm add`, `yarn add`) instead of manually writing version numbers. This lets the package manager resolve the latest compatible versions. Never specify version numbers from memory.
- Preemptively add a final todo item with this exact wording: "Re-read the 'Before Finishing' checklist in this skill and address each checkbox individually, stating what you did for each one, before marking this todo complete."

## Getting Reference Code

Clone the SDK repository for complete migration documentation and working examples:

```bash
git clone --branch "v$(npm view @modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps version)" --depth 1 https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps.git /tmp/mcp-ext-apps
```

### Migration Reference Guide

Read the migration reference guide with "before/after" mapping tables: `/tmp/mcp-ext-apps/docs/migrate_from_openai_apps.md`

### API Reference (Source Files)

Read JSDoc documentation directly from `/tmp/mcp-ext-apps/src/*`:

| File | Contents |
|------|----------|
| `src/app.ts` | `App` class, handlers, lifecycle |
| `src/server/index.ts` | `registerAppTool`, `registerAppResource` |
| `src/spec.types.ts` | Type definitions |
| `src/react/useApp.tsx` | `useApp` hook for React apps |
| `src/react/use*.ts*` | Other `use*` hooks for React apps |

### Front-End Framework Examples

See `/tmp/mcp-ext-apps/examples/basic-server-{framework}/` for basic SDK usage examples organized by front-end framework:

| Template | Key Files |
|----------|-----------|
| `basic-server-vanillajs/` | `server.ts`, `src/mcp-app.ts`, `mcp-app.html` |
| `basic-server-react/` | `server.ts`, `src/mcp-app.tsx` (uses `useApp` hook) |
| `basic-server-vue/` | `server.ts`, `src/App.vue` |
| `basic-server-svelte/` | `server.ts`, `src/App.svelte` |
| `basic-server-preact/` | `server.ts`, `src/mcp-app.tsx` |
| `basic-server-solid/` | `server.ts`, `src/mcp-app.tsx` |
