## What it does

The skill activates when you bump `MSTest.TestFramework`, `MSTest.TestAdapter`, the `MSTest` metapackage or `MSTest.Sdk` from 3.x to 4.x, and when something breaks afterwards. It inspects the project first and classifies the request: a focused source fix, a runtime behavior change, a CI discovery issue, a compatibility question, or a full migration. Then it follows the matching path.

One thing to know up front: MSTest v4 is not binary compatible with v3. Any library compiled against v3 has to be recompiled against v4. A clean compile proves little, because discovery failures, `TestContext` lifecycle exceptions and test-history changes only show up at runtime. Worth running the tests rather than stopping at `dotnet build`.

Custom `TestMethodAttribute` subclasses get their own path: `ExecuteAsync`, CallerInfo propagation, display-name handling and retry semantics are treated as one coupled change, not four separate edits. On `MSTest.Sdk` projects in MTP mode the skill flags that `Microsoft.NET.Test.Sdk` is no longer supplied, so transitional VSTest discovery needs the package added by hand. It is not meant for v1/v2 leftovers, framework conversion, or a general .NET upgrade.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill migrate-mstest-v3-to-v4 -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/migrate-mstest-v3-to-v4/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/migrate-mstest-v3-to-v4/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill migrate-mstest-v3-to-v4 -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/migrate-mstest-v3-to-v4/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill migrate-mstest-v3-to-v4 -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/migrate-mstest-v3-to-v4/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills migrate-mstest-v3-to-v4
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/migrate-mstest-v3-to-v4/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill migrate-mstest-v3-to-v4 -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-test-migration/skills/migrate-mstest-v3-to-v4
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/migrate-mstest-v3-to-v4/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill migrate-mstest-v3-to-v4 -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dotnet/skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/dotnet-test-migration/skills/migrate-mstest-v3-to-v4/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- bump MSTest packages from 3.x to 4.x without drowning in build errors
- work through CS0507, CS0103, CS1061 and CS1615 after the upgrade
- repair a custom TestMethodAttribute with ExecuteAsync and CallerInfo
- find out why tests disappear after a clean build
- assess TestCase.Id history and TreatDiscoveryWarningsAsErrors changes

## Example prompts
- My project is on MSTest 3.8.0 and I want v4 — what breaks and how do I fix it?
- After upgrading to MSTest v4 my custom TestMethodAttribute fails with CS1061, fix the class
- MSTest.Sdk project, vstest.console finds no tests after the upgrade — what happened?

# MSTest v3 -> v4 Migration

Migrate a test project from MSTest v3 to MSTest v4. The outcome is a project using MSTest v4 that builds cleanly, passes tests, and accounts for every source-incompatible and behavioral change. MSTest v4 is **not binary compatible** with MSTest v3 -- any library compiled against v3 must be recompiled against v4.

## First Action

Inspect the supplied project and source before searching the web or answering
from memory. Classify the request as a focused source fix, runtime behavior
change, CI discovery issue, compatibility question, or full migration, then
follow the matching row below. A clean compile does not exclude this skill:
discovery failures, `TestContext` lifecycle exceptions, and test-history
changes are runtime migration failures.

## When to Use

- Upgrading `MSTest.TestFramework`, `MSTest.TestAdapter`, or `MSTest` metapackage from 3.x to 4.x
- Upgrading `MSTest.Sdk` from 3.x to 4.x
- Fixing build errors after updating to MSTest v4 packages
- Resolving behavioral changes in test execution after upgrading to MSTest v4
- Updating custom `TestMethodAttribute` or `ConditionBaseAttribute` implementations for v4

## When Not to Use

- The project already uses MSTest v4 and builds cleanly -- migration is done
- Upgrading from MSTest v1 or v2 -- use `migrate-mstest-v1v2-to-v3` first, then return here
- The project does not use MSTest
- Migrating between test frameworks (e.g., MSTest to xUnit or NUnit)
