## What it does

The skill covers Azure Functions troubleshooting, configuration, quotas, security, hosting choices, and deployment. Its reference topics include triggers and bindings, HTTP and storage integrations, monitoring, CI/CD, and migrations. Ask the agent to investigate a specific error or help choose an integration pattern.

Local reference material is paired with documentation retrieval through `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch`, with `fetch_webpage` as a fallback. Network access is required to retrieve remote documentation. Without it, the agent cannot fetch those materials, though the local references remain available.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure, Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-functions -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-functions/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-functions/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-functions -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-functions/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-functions -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-functions/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills azure-functions
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-functions/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-functions -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --path skills/azure-functions
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-functions/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-functions -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/azure-functions/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- diagnose an Azure Functions error
- connect a function to storage with a trigger and binding
- choose a hosting plan and scaling settings
- review network access and security configuration
- plan a CI/CD deployment for Functions

## Example prompts
- Investigate this Azure Functions error and suggest which settings to check.
- Explain how to connect an Azure Function to a queue using a trigger and binding.
- Compare Azure Functions hosting options for this project.

# Azure Functions Skill

This skill provides expert guidance for Azure Functions. Covers troubleshooting, best practices, decision making, limits & quotas, security, configuration, integrations & coding patterns, and deployment. It combines local quick-reference content with remote documentation fetching capabilities.

## How to Use This Skill

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: Use the **Category Index** below to locate relevant sections. For categories with line ranges (e.g., `L35-L120`), use `read_file` with the specified lines. For categories with file links (e.g., `[security.md](security.md)`), use `read_file` on the linked reference file

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: If `metadata.generated_at` is more than 3 months old, suggest the user pull the latest version from the repository. If `mcp_microsoftdocs` tools are not available, suggest the user install it: [Installation Guide](https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/mcp/blob/main/README.md)

This skill requires **network access** to fetch documentation content:
- **Preferred**: Use `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill`. Returns Markdown.
- **Fallback**: Use `fetch_webpage` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill&accept=text/markdown`. Returns Markdown.
