# microfrontends

Splits a large app into independently deployable units that still render as one site. Handy when several teams own parts of the frontend.

## What it does

The skill covers building microfrontends on Vercel. One project acts as the default app and serves unmatched requests, while the others get their own paths through `routing` in `microfrontends.json`. Routing runs on Vercel's global network, so you don't stand up a separate gateway. Next.js with App Router and Pages Router, SvelteKit, React Router and Vite are all supported via `@vercel/microfrontends`.

Reference docs live in `references/`, split by topic: config schema, path expressions and asset prefixes, the local proxy, group management, troubleshooting and security rules. The skill greps the relevant file instead of loading everything, which keeps context free on a large monorepo.

The CLI `vercel microfrontends` (also `vercel mf`) creates and deletes groups, adds projects to them, pulls the remote config for local work and starts the local proxy. Two things to check first: `add-to-group`, `remove-from-group` and `delete-group` need an interactive terminal, and `--non-interactive` group creation is blocked when adding the projects would exceed the free tier limit, so billing changes have to be confirmed by hand. Deleting a group is irreversible.

## Install

### Codex (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openai/plugins --skill microfrontends -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/microfrontends/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Claude Code

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openai/plugins --skill microfrontends -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/microfrontends/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/microfrontends/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/microfrontends/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install openai/plugins microfrontends
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/microfrontends/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/openai/plugins --path plugins/vercel/skills/microfrontends
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/microfrontends/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/openai/plugins/tree/HEAD/plugins/vercel/skills/microfrontends/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split a monolith across several teams
- route requests between Vercel projects under one domain
- migrate to microfrontends incrementally instead of a rewrite
- run a local proxy for multi-zone development
- share a layout and navigation across projects

## Example prompts
- set up microfrontends.json for two zones
- add this project to an existing microfrontends group
- why doesn't the local proxy see my second project

# Vercel Microfrontends
Split a large application into independently deployable units that render as one cohesive app. Vercel handles routing on its global network using `microfrontends.json`.

**Core concepts:** default app (has `microfrontends.json`, serves unmatched requests) · child apps (have `routing` path patterns) · asset prefix (prevents static-asset collisions) · independent deployments.

**Frameworks:** Next.js (App Router + Pages Router), SvelteKit, React Router, Vite — all via `@vercel/microfrontends`.

**CLI (`vercel microfrontends` / `vercel mf`):**
- `create-group` — create a new group; interactive by default, or fully non-interactive with `--non-interactive` (options: `--name`, `--project` (repeatable), `--default-app`, `--default-route`, `--project-default-route` (repeatable, format: `<project>=<route>`, required for each non-default project in non-interactive mode), `--yes` to skip confirmation prompt); note: `--non-interactive` is blocked if adding the projects would exceed the free tier limit — the user must confirm billing changes interactively
- `add-to-group` — add the current project to an existing group; requires interactive terminal (options: `--group`, `--default-route`)
- `remove-from-group` — remove the current project from its group; requires interactive terminal (option: `--yes` skips project-link prompt only)
- `delete-group` — delete a group and all its settings, irreversible; requires interactive terminal (option: `--group` to pre-select group)
- `inspect-group` — retrieve group metadata (project names, frameworks, git repos, root dirs); useful for automating setup (options: `--group`, `--format=json`, `--config-file-name`)
- `pull` — pull remote `microfrontends.json` for local development (option: `--dpl`)
```
